This is powered by tannins while also keeping its fresh fruit intact. There is a mineral texture that's layered with a juicy fruit character on the finish. - R.V.

A 2011 with blackberry, dark-chocolate and smoked-meat character. Full body, silky tannins and a long, intense finish. All about balance and polish. Very fine. Needs three to four years to soften. Try in 2017.

My impression is that the 2011 Pichon Lalande will have its day, one day. For now, big, burly tannins give the 2011 a decidedly monolithic feel. To be sure, there is plenty of fruit density and power lurking in the glass... My impression is that the 2011 Pichon Lalande will have its day, one day. For now, big, burly tannins give the 2011 a decidedly monolithic feel. To be sure, there is plenty of fruit density and power lurking in the glass, but the 2011 needs more time in bottle before it starts showing at its best. Two thousand-eleven was marked by an unusual weather pattern in which spring was quite warm and dry, but then summer was cool.

Independent sibling of Pichon-Baron this 89-hectare estate borders Chateau Latour. Soils are gravel and clay over deep limestone and sandstone. Aged in 50% new French oak. Deep purple core. The nose exudes notes of blackberry raspberry and crushed rocks. The palate is all about finesse and elegance as the tannins are ultra-refined and the finish is remarkably long. This wine is big rich and balanced. Another very successful vintage at Pichon Lalande in an overall difficult year. Enjoy 2018-2030.
