Tasted blind at the Sauternes 2011 horizontal tasting. The Château Rayne-Vigneau 2011 has a more resinous bouquet than the Rieussec ’11: hints of lanolin and smoked walnut infusing the honeyed fruit and lending complexity and personality. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp acidity. There is fine tension here, neatly counterbalancing the strong botrytized fruit and it fans out wonderfully on the finish. It needs more bottle age to develop personality, but from this foundation it is set to become a Sauternes from the top drawer. - Neal Martin

A solid version of the richer style, delivering a bolt of creamed pineapple, yellow apple and pear flavors allied to a backdrop of ginger and piecrust notes. The long, creamy finish lets a mango accent echo. Drink now... Aromatic, nuanced nose combines nectarine, white peach and fresh flowers. Bright, fruity, and intense; at once mouthfilling and gripping, boasting lovely inner-mouth energy to the stone fruit and lime flavors. The long finish is balanced, complex and nicely delineated. This wine is more about finesse than power, but I really enjoy its precision. - Ian D'Agata

The vines are planted to a sand and gravel mix with clay subsoils. A pale straw yellow-green tinged color. Shows quince and lemon citrus on the nose. A rich mouthcoating texture showing notes of marmalade orange zest and quince with a touch of vanillin oak followed by citrus notes that bring everything into focus. Good delineation of fruit and fine balance of sugars and acid. This will be enjoyable young and drink nicely over the next 15-20 years.
