Intense, with ginger, yellow apple chutney, dried pineapple and papaya flavors coursing through a finish that brims with singed almond and lemon chiffon flavors. This retains a touch of youthful rawness, featuring a bitter orange note that’s yet to be absorbed. No need to rush. Best from 2018 through 2040. From France. — J.M.

It is sumptuous and generous, ripe and full-bodied. The essential acidity comes through the dry structure of botrytis and sweet honey. The fruit is only just beginning to show and the wine is obviously very young. Drink from 2022.

The 2011 Rieussec, a blend of 95% Semillon, 2% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle is an absolute dream. There is wonderful precision and mineralité on the nose, the new oak more integrated than a few months ago. The palate is beautifully balanced with clear honey, brioche and pralines, a sensual Rieussec that is utterly charming, hints of nougat and almond lingering on the long finish. Gorgeous! Spicy botrytis complicates aromas of fresh peach passion fruit rose water and marzipan with an enticing floral quality providing lift. Suave and fine-grained showing a more delicate than usual texture for this cuvee with intense flavors of passion fruit peach and saffron. A subtle restrained example of Rieussec with nicely integrated acidity and very good finishing grip. Harvested between September 1 and November 2 in three to seven selective pickings per parcel.

Vibrant yellow-green color. The nose has complex aromas of mango vanilla bean and toasted coconut along with brighter notes of Meyer lemon. This has broad rich texture with layer upon layer of well-delineated and refined fruit nice ginger spice on the finish and vibrant acidity. This will have a long and generous life ahead of it. Drink over the next 20+ years.

Label

Chateau Rieussec has been a leader among the great wines of Sauternes for several generations. Ranked as a Premier Grand Cru in 1855, it is made with a subtle blend of Semillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle. Aged in oak barrels for 18 to 26 months depending on the year, with 50 to 55% in new barrels. The annual production varies a great deal depending on the vintage, but on average is about 6,000 cases, however, none was made in 1977, 1993 and 2012.

Winery

Rieussec

Chateau Rieussec is one of the largest properties in Sauternes and Barsac, covering 93 hectares of gravelly soil layered with alluvial deposits. The vineyard is planted mostly with Semillon (90%), followed by Sauvignon Blanc (7%) and Muscadelle (3%). It was classified as a First Growth in the 1855 Classification of Sauternes and Barsac.

The estate belonged to the Carmelite monks in Langon in the 18th century, but was confiscated during the revolution. In 1790, the property was sold as an “object of national heritage” to Mr. Marheilhac, owner at that time of Chateau La Louviere in Leognan.

The estate changed ownership several times until 1971 when it came into the hands of Albert Vuillier, passionate about Sauternes sweet wines but lacking the financial resources to make the necessary improvements. In 1984, Domaines Barons de Rothschild entered the scene and acquired Chateau Rieussec. Since then, the estate has made strides forward in quality and continues to produce outstanding wines.
