The 2011 Grands Echézeaux is dark and brooding. The aromas are slightly restrained, yet plummy fruit aromas with an edge of earth, leather and mint emerge on the palate. The wine is more substantial than the Echézeaux, with firm tannins and plenty of extract balanced by a lively acidity. There is a pleasant note of ‘beaux amers’ (beautiful bitterness) on the finish. The wine should begin to open in the next few years, and I'm convinced it will eventually shine. Picked 9-10 September; 11,071 bottles produced.
