Cottanera is showing an ever-increasing learning curve, and I think this is very evident in this Riserva. This is the second edition of a limited-edition (only 1,982 bottles were produced), single-vineyard, top-shelf wine. The 2012 Etna Rosso Riserva Zottorinoto puts Cottanera's winemaking moxie to the test. The results show depth, volume and power, with bold aromatic trimmings of blackberry, crème de cassis, balsam herb and dried mint. But the real personality of the bouquet is driven by those distinctive mineral notes of ash and brimstone. In the mouth, the wine is alive and succulent. This is an excellent, cellar-worthy red wine from Etna. -Monica Larner

Intensely perfumed nose of spicy black cherry, coffee and floral elements. Pliant blackberry and cherry flavors have a plush quality and a restrained sweetness, not to mention outstanding concentration. Is there a trace of alcoholic warmth here? Picks up notes of violet and lavender with aeration and closes with slow-building, silky tannins and noteworthy length.- Ian D'Agata
