Coming from a cool, west-facing plot, the 2012 Pinot Noir Van der Kamp Vineyard is another savory, complex effort that gives up subtle red currants, pipe tobacco, leather and licorice. Beautiful on the palate, with more sweet fruit than the nose would have you believe, it has solid mid-palate concentration, medium-bodied richness and fine tannin on the finish. A distinct nose of menthol dark currant combines with notes of anise, clove and sandalwood. There is good detail and verve to the medium weight flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel before terminating in an ever-so-slightly tangy and palate coating finish that will probably harmonize with a few years of bottle age. This is refreshing and I like the intensity and with a bit more depth this should become even more attractive.

We like this wine more for what it will be rather than what it is now, and it stands as one of the tighter, more firmly framed Pinots in the new Siduri lot. Even though somewhat coarse and getting gradually more grippy as it goes, it is always solidly filled and deep in essential young fruit. It not only can age, it absolutely needs it, and we are fully confident that it will continue to grow and improve for another five or six years at the least.

From an unusual site long sourced by the producer, this vintage carries through in terms of intensity of flavor. Black tea and spice-tinged pomegranate suround a weighty structure of velvety tannins. Explosive dark cherry and raspberry complete the picture.
