Given the difficulty with Grenache in 2013, the Grenache-dominated 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Imperiale (Vigne Centenaires) is a head-turner that offers terrific notes of plum, black cherries, mulberries, dried flowers and licorice. Brought up all in concrete tank, this medium to full-bodied, ripe, textured, yet structured Grenache will be better in a year or three, and drink well through 2025. - Jeb Dunnuck

A big ball of currant paste, raspberry preserves and cherry reduction. There’s ample anise, roasted alder and tobacco notes in the background. Best from 2018 through 2028. — J.M.

Fresh blackberry, cherry cola and potpourri aromas are energized by a peppery nuance. Sweet, broad and seamless in texture, offering juicy, nicely concentrated red and dark berry flavors and a hint of candied lavender. Shows excellent depth, breadth and power on the gently tannic finish, and a hint of licorice pastille comes on late. - Josh Raynolds

Tons of cassis, plum and black cherries layered with a distinct floral note. In true Southern Rhone fashion, there is plenty of dried provencal herbs, olives and licorice to be had as well. The palate is a lovely callback to the nose that is held together by a seamless structure of soft, but chewy, tannins and lively acidity. This is drinking incredibly well for its young age. Drink now through 2024.

Imperiale is sourced from the estate’s oldest vineyards, majority of which are planted in 1901 and 1902. Yields are extremely low, ensuring a dense and deep wine. The old Grenache vines contribute finesse and elegance so this wine can age for decades.

Domaine Raymond Usseglio

The Raymond Usseglio domaine is one of the top-producing estates in Chateauneuf du Pape. The estate was originally created by Francis Usseglio who moved to the Rhone from Italy in 1931 and started producing his own wine in 1948. He was succeeded in 1963 by his son Raymond Usseglio who enlarged the area, now bearing his own name, with the help of his mother Danielle.

In 1999, Raymond’s son Stephane took over the domaine and is in now in charge of its operations, cultivating 60 acres, 40 of which are in Chateauneuf du Pape, 12 in Cotes du Rhone, and 7 classified as IGP. The estate practices sustainable and biodynamic farming techniques.
