Deep ruby leading to a violet edge. The nose on the this Chateauneuf is refreshingly classic and surprisingly pretty. Tons of cassis, plum and black cherries layered with a distinct floral note. In true Southern Rhone fashion, there is plenty of dried provencal herbs, olives and licorice to be had as well. The palate is a lovely callback to the nose that is held together by a seamless structure of soft, but chewy, tannins and lively acidity. This is drinking incredibly well for its young age. Drink now through 2024.

Given the difficulty with Grenache in 2013, the Grenache-dominated 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Imperiale (Vigne Centenaires) is a head-turner that offers terrific notes of plum, black cherries, mulberries, dried flowers and licorice. Brought up all in concrete tank, this medium to full-bodied, ripe, textured, yet structured Grenache will be better in a year or three, and drink well through 2025. - Jeb Dunnuck
