Deep, brooding aromas of dark berries, brown spices and earth. Extremely introverted on the palate, with strong saline soil tones currently overshadowing the wine's fruit. This finished its malolactic fermentation in July (most of these 2013s finished between March and June of last year) and is clearly behind most of the Gevrey wines here in its development. But this saline, classically dry, very long Bonnes-Mares should prove to be an outstanding wine of terroir 10 or 12 years down the road.

(BH92-94 points) An overtly spicy nose also displays moderate though by no means invisible oak influence along with plenty of earth character. There is outstanding volume, power, muscle and mid-palate concentration to the serious broad-shouldered flavors that deliver impressive persistence on the beautifully well-balanced and hugely long finish. This is a big but not hard wine though the supporting tannins are notably firm so note well that sufficient patience is a prerequisite. 2028+

The 2013 Bonnes-Mares from Domaine Jadot is also outstanding and was really singing at the time of my visit. The pure and youthfully complex nose delivers a fine constellation of black cherries, plums, cocoa, woodsmoke, gamebirds, lovely soil tones and a stylish base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure on the attack, with a fine core, suave tannins and excellent focus and balance on the very long, classy and energetic finish. Lovely juice. (Drink between 2023-2060)

It unfolds with blackberry, briary and light orange blossom scents. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins. It feels a little angular at the moment and it needs to gain more substance toward the finish. Perhaps this will go through a gawky stage in its youth? - Neal Martin
