(WA92-94 points) The 2013 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Combottes, which was bought by Hubert Lignier way back in 1959, has an enticing bouquet that offers vanilla-tinged red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with considerable weight in the mouth. The tannins form a more masculine finish than the nose suggest, but there is sufficient fruit here to see it age over many years. Excellent. - Neal Martin

Complex, alluring perfume of red cherry, spices and flowers. Silky, concentrated and seamless, with dense, dark flavors of black raspberry, blackberry, violet and minerals showing impressive medicinal reserve. There's an almost chocolatey ripeness but the wine does not come across as especially sweet. Firm and rocky but not dry on the finish. When I mentioned to Laurent Lignier that I frequently prefer this well-placed premier cru to his Charmes-Chambertin, he noted that he often refers to this wine as his Combottes-Chambertin.
