Refined aromas of boysenberry, black cherry, minerals and violet. Subtle, suave and fine-grained, with dark berry and pungent mineral flavors coming across as utterly seamless yet vigorous. Not a fat wine but wonderfully perfumed, gripping and long. Like a mini-2010 in style, and built for a slow and graceful evolution in bottle.

(BH91-94♥ points) A subtle if not invisible application of wood sets off the spicy, elegant and ultra-pure nose of layered red currant, cherry, violet and warm earth aromas. The delicious, concentrated and sleekly muscular flavors possess outstanding mid-palate concentration before terminating in a balanced and strikingly long finish. The old vine sap is very much in evidence as it pushes the otherwise firm tannins to the background and imparts a velvety feel. This should be terrific in time.

One of the reasons I never got my act together and bought more Roncières back in the day is I always bought a lot of les Cailles- not a bad thing- and the 2013 is definitely a wine I want in my cellar! This is an utterly beautiful wine, with a fine sense of reserve today that augurs extremely well for its evolution in bottle. The stunning bouquet offers up scents of black cherries, red plums, bitter chocolate, a gorgeously complex base of soil, woodsmoke, gamebirds and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and very, very soil-driven, with a rock solid core of sappy fruit, tangy acids, laser-like focus and great length and grip on the ripely tannic finish. This is another 2013 that harkens back very strongly to the 1993 version! (Drink between 2023-2060)

The palate is better with supple red fruit, but it feels hard and needs more fleshiness towards the leafy, tertiary finish. Not a bad wine, easy-going, and it improves in the glass gaining more harmony and complexity. Give this another 2-3 years in bottle. Tasted September 2016. - Neal Martin
