Effortless, supple and nicely layered, the 2014 hits all the right notes. The midweight style of the year comes through very nicely in this classy, polished Saint-Émilion. Proprietor Hélène Garcin and consulting winemaker Alain Raynaud captured all of the vintage's potential. The blend is 90 % Merlot and 10 % Cabernet Franc.

(WS90-93 points) Features a slightly extracted feel, with a plum skin note running along the edges of the licorice, steeped cherry and raspberry core. The fruit pushes through in the end, with extra spice and a ganache hint filling in on the finish. Shows solid grip for the vintage.

The 2014 Barde-Haut, a blend of 87.3% Merlot and 12.7% Cabernet Franc, has a relatively opulent bouquet compared to its peers with ripe red cherries, kirsch, hints of crème de cassis, and it becomes spicier as it opens in the glass. The palate is smooth on the entry with succulent ripe red and black fruit. This feels harmonious and silky smooth, just a touch of pain grillé on the entry, fine structure, tightening up on the mid-palate with a gentle, insistent grip on the lightly spiced finish where the Cabernet Franc imparts a subtle bell pepper note. This is excellent. - Neal Martin

While I wasn’t able to taste the 2015, the 2014 Chateau Barde-Haut from a bottle purchased locally offered a deep ruby color as well as lots of chocolate, dried red and black fruits, licorice and spicy oak. It’s plump, rounded, and nicely textured on the palate, with a slightly rustic, charming, fruit loaded style. A blend of close to 90% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc brought up in 80% new wood, it should smooth out with 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for a decade.

Ripe fig, sweet-tart blackberry, chalk and bramble flow through the nose and palate. Nicely layered and complex, the juicy acidity says, ‘drink me now’ and the chewy tannins say ‘lay me down’. Either way, it’s a win-win for value Bordeaux.

Barde-Haut

Chateau Barde-Haut is a 17-hectare estate located at the extreme east of the village of Saint-Emilion with its vineyard forming a natural amphitheater with a southern exposure. The soil is very typical of Saint-Emilion, mainly composed of clay which on a layer of chalk.

The property was bought in 2000 by Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard, whose family also owns Clos L’Eglise in Pomerol, Chateau Haut-Bergey and Chateau Branon in Pessac Leognan. Significant investments have been made in the cellar and all work is done by gravity to ensure the grapes are well respected.

Chateau Barde-Haut was promoted to Grand Cru Classe in the 2012 classification of Saint-Emilion wine and is one of the rising stars of Saint-Emilion.
