Bouchard Père & Fils’ Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2014 is a Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most historic walled vineyards in the Côte de Nuits. Clos de Vougeot is a large Grand Cru site (around 50 hectares) with many owners, and Bouchard’s wine draws on the house’s long experience shaping classic Côte d’Or reds from significant terroirs. The domaine, based in Beaune since the 18th century, is also known for élevage in its Château de Beaune cellars and for working with sustainable viticulture.
In 2014, the winemaking emphasis appears to include a meaningful portion of whole clusters. James Suckling notes that “the 50% whole-cluster vinification gives this a bounce,” and his excellent 95-point score is matched by a description that’s “very perfumed,” with “plenty of strawberry, rose-petal and stem aromas,” backed by “fine tannins” and “a lightly stemmy finish.” He concludes: “Drink or hold.”
Neal Martin, writing for Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and awarding an excellent 93 points, highlights precision and restraint, calling it “clean, subtle and well-defined,” with “wild strawberry, Morello and redcurrant scents.” He also points to refinement in élevage: “The oak here is much better integrated,” and praises how the wine carries itself on the palate, citing “purity…balance and poise,” before noting the finish “gently fans out.” Martin sums it up as “Excellent—this is another impressive showing from Bouchard Père et Fils.”
Vinous (Stephen Tanzer, 93 points) frames the wine as energetic rather than plush: “Juicy, pure and youthfully imploded,” with “excellent energy” to its “black fruit and licorice flavors.” He adds that “crisp acidity and savory minerality contribute to its penetrating quality,” finishing with “firm, ripe tannins and excellent length.”
Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy, 92 points) similarly finds it “zesty, lively,” with “some whole bunch,” and while “not hugely concentrated,” he calls it “fine and balanced.” Overall, the reviews suggest a structured, aromatic Clos Vougeot that prioritizes clarity, integrated oak, and persistence over sheer weight.
