Dense, opaque purple in the glass, this gorgeous Santa Barbara Cabernet opens with an explosive bouquet of ripe, freshly crushed blackberries and blueberries before revealing undertones of dry, parched earth, dry stewing spices and dry flowers. It also carries classic tones of currants and star anis. Transitioning to the palate, it is rich, intense and complex, but well balanced. The flavor profile follows the bouquet seamlessly with elegant tannins and a bright, racy acidity that carries the wine through on its long and luxurious finish. Gorgeous now but will age gracefully for another decade plus.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Star Lane Vineyard, a re-release from the estate's library, shows just how well these wines age. At ten years of age, the 2014 is just starting to show the first signs of aromatic and flavor complexity. Black fruit, spice, leather, tobacco and incense lend gravitas to this potent, structured Happy Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon. The heat and drought that marked this vintage remain signatures, but at the same time, the strong, bold pungent signatures of the region are dialed down. This has aged quite well. -- Antonio Galloni

Cellar Selection. This vintage is the first that was under complete control of winemaker Tyler Thomas, and his studious touch shows magically. There's a powerful density of ripe but not sweet black fruit on the nose of this bottling, along with hints of violets, turned earth and leather. The structure is firm, dense and chalky but with a vivid acidity, offering ethereal, supple flavors of black currant and cocoa on the finish. Drink 2018–2034.
