This dense, rich wine is firm with solid tannins. Its texture and structure give it an opulent character that brings out tannins as much as the ripe black fruits. Powerful and concentrated it needs time to get its potential elegance in order. Then it will be a major wine, so it's worth waiting until 2027.

Captures the texture and power of great St Estèphe, with aromatic fragrant spice, blueberry and cassis fruit, and has plenty of joy to deliver. Great quality at the ten year point, just about ready to drink at this point but decades ahead. Silky black fruit on the attack, with a little dip on the mid-palate, but juicy damson strikes back as it moves along. Tobacco floats across the nose and adds a flourish to the focused graphite and black fruit flavours. You find complexity through the palate, and although things pull up a bit short, I seriously like this wine. St-Estephe has been having a real purple patch over the past couple of years, and Calon-Ségur is right up there with the best of them. 20 months in new oak. The 2015 Calon-Ségur has a gorgeous, fresh nose with raspberry and cranberry fruit, fine delineation and, as I wrote before, exquisite oak integration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It's a little toasty at the moment, with good depth and a touch of allspice toward the dense finish. Perhaps this doesn't possess the complexity of the very top vintages from Vincent Millet, yet it has the legs to last many years. I loved the 2015 Calon Segur and while it’s true the northern Médoc is less successful in 2015, this beauty is certainly one to seek out. Based on 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot aged all in new barrels, its deep ruby/purple color is followed by gorgeous notes of crème de cassis, blackcurrants, toasted spices, lead pencil shavings, and hints of dried flowers. While it’s not the most concentrated wine of the vintage, it has medium to full-bodied richness, polished tannin, and a gorgeous elegance about it that keeps you coming back to the glass. Drink it over the coming 20-30 years.

Composed of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2015 Calon-Segur was aged in 100% new French oak barrels for 20 months. It has a deep garnet-purple color and nose of warm blackberries, cassis, black cherries and licorice with touches of roses and dark chocolate. This has a nearly plush edge, surprising for the vintage, with warmed plum, blackberry and black cherry compote flavors liberally inlaid with smoldering tobacco, humus and roasted juniper notes. Keeps a fleshy edge through the finish, with a streak of warm paving stone lending an austere hint. Best from 2020 through 2035. 6,667 cases made. — JM

Starting to close in at the moment, you can still catch a glimpse of the bright, crisp red fruits before it goes to sleep. The wine has sweet fruits, ripe tannins and length, but perhaps it lacks some weight on the mid palate.
