So opulent, plush and enticing with blackberry, blueberry, chocolate and walnut undertones. It’s full-bodied with balanced, refined and silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Tannic and juicy. Better after 2024.

I tasted this wine twice over a 12-hour period, and it took time to open. Dried cassis and berry fruit tones are followed by tar, licorice and rosemary essence. Give it time and this Riserva is an open and accessible expression that underlines intensity, depth and the broad shoulders expected of a Riserva. The fruit is darker and the oak is more prominent, so is the general extraction and richness. This wine draws its fruit from a vineyard with in-house select clones planted in 1982. With 20,000 bottles made, we won't see this wine until April 2021.

Expressive aromatics of black cherry cola, balsamic, and sweet tobacco are followed by a generous mid-palate of sun ripened cherry and baked earth, with silky tannins and warming baking spice on the finish. There is serious structure here that is offset by the sunniness of the fruit, making it somewhat approachable in the near future. Cellaring for a couple years should be rewarded over the following 15 years.

Castello Banfi

Castello Banfi, a family-owned wine estate in the Tuscany region, was founded in 1978 by Italian-American brothers, John and Harry Mariani.

The Banfi territory encompasses 7,100 acres of land in Montalcino, of which about one third is planted with Sangiovese, Moscadello and other notable varieties on extremely rich and uniform soils of clay and calcium.

Banfi Piedmont was founded with the acquisition of the historic Bruzzone winery. The holdings there extend between the towns of Novi Ligure and Acqui over an area of 124 acres of which 114 are under vine.

The Banfi vineyards in Bolgheri, located south of Castagneto Carducci, give life to the prized Aska, bringing together intensity, roundness and structure.

Banfi also manages 100 acres of specialized vineyard in Chianti which bequeaths wines that bring together structure, elegance, and typical Tuscan personality.
