From an intriguing blend of two-thirds Marsanne and Roussanne, with Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Chardonnay, aged in oak, half of which is new. The wine is rounded, showing nutty, biscuity notes from the new wood, and with elegant texture and subtle nuances from the diversity of grape varieties, and also from the diversity of terroirs. It is drinking beautifully now, but will continue to develop in bottle. One of the original white wines of the south. While the reds are well-known from this iconic estate, their white doesn’t get the attention it deserves, which is a shame as it’s one of the best in Provence. A blend of mostly Marsanne and Roussanne, with small amounts of Grenache Blanc, Clairette, and Chardonnay, the 2015 Coteaux d'Aix en Provence Alpilles Blanc has a deep, reductive style in its orchard fruits, crushed rock, flinty minerality, and charcoal bouquet. Beautifully concentrated, with a stacked mid-palate and integrated acidity, it has no hard edges, gorgeous balance, and a big finish. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following decade or more.

(17.5/20) Made from approximately two-thirds Marsanne and Roussanne with Clairette, Grenache and Chardonnay in support, each aged in oak barrels, of which half were new. Super-inviting oaky richness with the nutty, ripe stone fruit bursting through the creamy/mealy barrel influence. Savoury with its freshness derived more from the grainy texture and a very slight but attractive sour note on the finish. Powerful but harmonious and delicious – but avoid if you don’t like oak. (JH)
