If you are a fan of the Comtes Lafon Montrachet and comfortable enough to shop for it, make sure to put in extra effort to finding bottles of the 2015 version, as the frost damage here was so severe in 2016 that there will be none produced from the domaine. The quantity of grapes in the vineyard was so small that Comtes Lafon has pooled their grapes with those from five other domaines in the vineyard (including DRC and Domaine Leflaive) to make a blended Montrachet in 2016 from their combined grapes. The 2015 Montrachet is stunning wine, soaring from the glass in a magical blend of pear, tangerine, fresh almond, chalky, complex soil tones, spring flowers and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very, very pure on the attack, with a great core, stunning energy and a very long, laser-like and racy finish. Sheer brilliance! (94-96) Moderate wood sets off a notably ripe and ever-so-mildly exotic nose that includes notes of peach and pear liqueur along with an abundance of floral and spice wisps. This is also imposingly scaled with its full-bodied and overtly powerful mouth coating flavors that deliver almost painful intensity and power on the dramatically long finish. Once again this is a big but impeccably well-balanced effort that should amply repay extended keeping. A 'wow' wine.

Tasted blind, Lafon's 2015 Montrachet Grand Cru displays incredible potential, unfurling in the glass with a classy bouquet of buttered Meyer lemons, toasted nuts, dried white flowers and mandarin oil. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, richly textural but tangy, with a deep, tight-knit core, excellent concentration and a long, pure finish. An hour later, this Montrachet was still filling out, acquiring more dimension along with subtly honeyed aromatic top notes, so I suspect my score will prove conservative. -WK
