jamessuckling.com, September 2020

Ripe plum and cherry aromas with dried flowers and spices. Some lavender and cedar, too. Full bodied, tight and chewy. Needs time to soften and come together. Better after 2022.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 2020

The Fattoria dei Barbi 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is a extremely polished and precise expression that hits all the right buttons for those seeking a classic expression of Sangiovese. In appearance, the wine shows a...

Vinous, April 2020

93+ Good brilliant red color. Wild aromas of red and darker berries, flint and violet. Juicy, herbal and firm, with precise red berry and mineral flavors. Closes bright and long, with mounting tannic bite. -- Ian D'Agata

Wine Spectator, June 2020

Plum, cherry, iron, earth and salty notes mark this vibrant red. Lean and sinewy, with firm, dusty tannins plying the finish. This comes together well overall, delivering a solid core of ripe fruit. Best from 2023 through...

Wine Enthusiast, July 2020

Menthol, blue-flower and tilled soil aromas emerge from the glass along with a whiff of dried tobacco leaf. The full-bodied palate offers dried cherry, vanilla and clove before finishing on a note of powdered sage...

First arriving in Montalcino in 1352, the Colombini family can trace their roots in Tuscany back to the Middle Ages when they were active in the Sienese government. As winemakers, they earned recognition and awards for their releases in the 19th century, though it was Giovanni Colombini, born in 1906, who was instrumental in bringing recognition to the wines of Fattoria dei Barbi.

An innovator and a pioneer of modern viticulture, opening of the first retail wine shop in Italy at the Fortress of Montalcino was his idea. Continuing his string of “firsts”, he started a mail-order business to sell Tuscan wines, and was also the first to make sales overseas in many markets. The opening of the Fattoria dei Barbi cellar to visitors in the 1950’s was one of the first steps in developing the region’s wine tourism.

After the death of Giovanni Colombini in 1976, Fattoria dei Barbi was managed first by his daughter Francesca, and afterwards by his nephew Stefano who continued to develop and expand the property into what we see today.

Now under management of Stefano Cinelli Colombini, Fattoria dei Barbi extends over 306 hectares at Montalcino and Scansano, producing 800,000 bottles annually, 200,000 of which are Brunello di Montalcino. There are three Brunelli, including the flagship Brunello di Montalcino (“blue label”), a single-vineyard Brunello Vigna del Fiore (“white label”), and a Riserva (“red label”). They also produce a Rosso di Montalcino, a Morellino di Scansano, and a range of Tuscan IGT reds and whites.

Produced since 1892, Barbi Brunello (aka “blue label”) is the “heart”of the estate’s production from 100% Sangiovese Grosso grown on the estate’s best Montalcino vineyards. In the Fattoria dei Barbi cellar, you can view a collection of thousands of bottles of Brunello dating all the way back to the original 1892 vintage.
