From the Laubach formation of the grand cru, the 2015 Riesling Uhlen L 'VDP Grosse Lage' is super flinty, refined and elegant on the nose where perfectly ripe Riesling and white truffle aromas are displayed. On the palate, this is an intense, dense and finessed Riesling with great tension, salinity and complexity. The finish is aromatic, pure and very long, really what Reinhard Löwenstein was aiming for: to serve the intellectuals as well as the hedonists. A great and age-worthy Riesling. - Stephan Reinhardt

The H-L the Uhlen “Rothlay” is the official star in the H-L range, but won’t be released until 2017, but this is already a mind-blowing wine. The great depth of super-ripe yellow fruit aromas and stunning textural richness that make this is an arresting wine. In spite of the scale and depth, this has great finesse at the very long finish.

Peony and carnation perfume, fennel and piquant peach kernel combine for an attention-getting nose. Luscious flesh of white peach lends welcome generosity on a polished, subtly creamy palate, setting this wine somewhat in contrast with the relative austerity and pithiness that characterized most of Löwenstein’s other single-site bottlings of this vintage. Chalk dust, fresh ginger and white pepper serve for intrigue and incisive invigoration on a vibrant finish mouthwateringly laced with saline, maritime mineral notes. “This was kind of boring right after the bottling,” remarked Löwenstein. Well, it certainly got over that quickly! (For reasons laid out in my coverage of this estate’s 2014s, the label here refers to Laubach in large script solely via the initial “L,” while “Terroir Laubach” appears below that in minuscule print. The name in fact refers to a specific geological formation that is unusually high in active calcaire for the Mosel. And speaking of minuscule, for reasons noted in the present estate introduction, you’ll have to squint or use a magnifying glass to find the letters “GG" on this wine’s label, signifying Grosses Gewächs.) -- David Schildknecht
