There are so much essence-like fruits on the nose of this Bolgheri Rosso, from blackberry perfume and dark-cherry compote to fresher elements of rosemary, lavender, hot stones and citrus. Full body with generous fruit, but the firm and beautifully woven tannin backbone keeps the palate fine and elegant. Very long on the finish. Drink in 2024.

It is a highly aromatic expression of Cabernet Franc, with a bouquet of roses and some notes of red cherry. The vineyard team was careful in timing the harvest and fermentations to make sure the fruit did not come in too ripe and so they could maintain the natural freshness of the grapes. The oak used is moderately to highly toasted so they could get more of those nutty notes instead of the more common coffee or chocolate aromas we associate with barrique. It is aged for 22 months and the overall result is incredible. - ML

The 2015 Paleo Rosso is powerful, dense and super-concentrated, with all of the richness of the vintage very much on display. The 2015 is going to need time in bottle to develop the full breadth of its aromatics. Today, it is dense, powerful and very closed. Even so, there is terrific persistence and follow through. All the 2015 needs is time to unwind. -- Antonio Galloni

Black currant, exotic spice, coconut and espresso mingle with whiffs of violet and cedar. On the smooth, delicious palate, fine-grained tannins give elegant support to cassis, pipe tobacco, chocolate, licorice and coffee. It's surprisingly fresh for the vintage. A hint of grilled bell pepper adds depth to the finish. Drink 2020–2027. KERIN O’KEEFE

Label

Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso was first produced in 1989 and has evolved over time from a classic Bordeaux blend to a 100% varietal Cabernet Franc. This is a beautiful story of obstinacy in challenging the stereotype of Cabernet Franc, which is already difficult to produce, and even more so as a pure varietal wine. Today Paleo Rosso is one of the most individual and distinct, as well as one of the most famous, Cabernet Franc wines produced in Italy. The word Paleo is a common name referring to the “Festuca Pratensis“ of the family Gramineae, a wild herb which grows on the Tuscan coast.

Winery

Le Macchiole

Le Macchiole is an estate in Bolgheri, Tuscany on the Etruscan Coast. Founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolini and Cinzia Merli, the estate has 24 hectares of organically farmed vineyards producing 5 single-variety wines: Paleo Bianco, Bolgheri Rosso, Paleo Rosso, Scrio and Messorio. It was a risky decision to produce single-varietal wines when neighbors such as Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Guado al Tasso were achieving world-renown for their Super Tuscan Bordeaux blends. But with commitment and determination, they achieved the esteem and recognition deserving of the series of their stunning wines.

Sadly, Eugenio passed away and did not live to see the result of his work but his legacy is continued by his wife Cinzia who works devotedly in the vineyards to demonstrate the purity and unique interpretation of Le Macchiole wines.
