jamessuckling.com, July 2018

A stunning syrah; the real McCoy for the variety. The depth of aroma takes your breath away with bark, tea leaves, peppermint, dried rosemary, thyme, sage, pressed violets, cedar, creme de cassis, blackcurrants and...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, May 2019

It's worth noting that the Scrio was not made in 2014, as Syrah did not reach the right maturity for the quality Le Macchiole looks for. The 2015 growing season wasn't much easier, with 15 days of extreme heat in July...

Wine Spectator, August 2019

Deep and saturated in both color and fruit, with core flavors of ripe plum, blackberry and black cherry, this red also offers interwoven notes of earth, vanilla, licorice and black pepper. This is solidly built, yet also...

Wine & Spirits, February 2020

Merli significantly reduced the influence of new wood in the 2015 vintage, moving to larger and older barrels (all second pass). The result is a syrah with nuanced scents of violet and wild thyme and concentrated, plummy...

Wine Enthusiast, April 2019

Aromas of black currant, cedar, bay leaf and a whiff of leather lead the way. On the firmly structured, elegant palate, fine-grained tannins support mature blackberry, black pepper and licorice. KERIN O’KEEFE

Le Macchiole is an estate in Bolgheri, Tuscany on the Etruscan Coast. Founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolini and Cinzia Merli, the estate has 24 hectares of organically farmed vineyards producing 5 single-variety wines: Paleo Bianco, Bolgheri Rosso, Paleo Rosso, Scrio and Messorio. It was a risky decision to produce single-varietal wines when neighbors such as Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Guado al Tasso were achieving world-renown for their Super Tuscan Bordeaux blends. But with commitment and determination, they achieved the esteem and recognition deserving of the series of their stunning wines.

Sadly, Eugenio passed away and did not live to see the result of his work but his legacy is continued by his wife Cinzia who works devotedly in the vineyards to demonstrate the purity and unique interpretation of Le Macchiole wines.
