Reduced aromas of black cherry, licorice and wild herbs. Then wonderfully silky yet also utterly primary in the mouth, offering high-pitched black cherry and herb flavors and finishing with substantial granular tannins. Almost austere but not exactly hard, even if it's rather inexpressive today. But this wine from 80-year-old vines has the material and balance to make an outstanding bottle. Bernstein describes these vines as "in the middle of the Clos on its south side, not far from Echézeaux." -Stephen Tanzer

(91-93) A brooding, ripe and almost mute nose only grudgingly offers up its aromas of various dark berries, earth and sauvage wisps. There is once again exceptionally good richness and volume to the full-bodied, mouth coating and powerful broad-shouldered flavors that deliver good if not excellent length on the noticeably warm and firm finish. This robust and imposing effort should benefit from extended cellaring because even with the warm it's clear that the tannins are fully mature.
