Chateau Pontet-Canet is a Fifth Growth Bordeaux wine estate owned by the Tesseron family (of Cognac fame) since 1975. The estate is a rarity in the Medoc, having known only three owners over a course of three centuries.

The vineyard spans 81 hectares in Pauillac, atop an outcropping of Garonne gravel over limestone. After a first trial in 2004, which took place on 14 hectares, Pontet-Canet fully converted the estate to biodynamic agriculture. They obtained organic certification from Ecocert, biodynamic certification from Biodyvin in 2010, and from Demeter in 2014.

Alfred Tesseron uses horses to plow the vineyards of Pontet Canet since they are gentler and lighter than tractors. Because the horses never step in the same place twice, the soils are always aerated in different parts, bringing much needed oxygen to the soil.

The vines have an average age of 40 to 45 years. Their varietal plantings are Cabernet Sauvignon (62%), Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (4%) and three parcels of Petit Verdot (2%).

Chateau Pontet-Canet is bright and brilliant with full-bodied fruit, yet finesse, in the mouth. It expresses energy, tension and intensity.

The fruit is fermented with native yeast in semi-conical concrete tanks that facilitate punch-downs. The wine then macerates for an additional four weeks before being removed from the pomace for maturation. One-third of the wine is aged in large, concrete amphorae, designed expressly for Pontet-Canet. The rest ages in French oak barrels.

The 2015 Pontet-Canet is a remarkable Bordeaux Blend that showcases the excellence of this renowned French region. With its deep garnet-purple color, this wine immediately captivates the eye and sets the stage for the sensory journey to come. The nose is filled with an array of expressive aromas, including black cherry preserves, black raspberries, and blackcurrant pastilles. Notes of kirsch, wilted roses, tobacco, camphor, and cinnamon stick add complexity and intrigue. A subtle hint of fragrant soil completes the aromatic profile, inviting you to delve deeper into the glass.

On the palate, the 2015 Pontet-Canet impresses with its full-bodied nature and layers of black and red fruit. The fruit flavors are supported by firm and finely grained tannins, contributing to the wine's structure and balance. The freshness and acidity are provocative, adding vibrancy and energy to the overall experience. As you savor each sip, the wine unfolds with incredible length, leaving a lasting impression on the palate.

Renowned wine critics have been enamored with the 2015 Pontet-Canet. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded it an impressive score of 97 points, describing it as "fantastically expressive" and praising its stunning perfumed finish. Jeb Dunnuck also bestowed a score of 95+, noting the wine's textbook Pauillac notes and its potential for long-term cellaring. James Suckling awarded it an outstanding 98 points, highlighting its floral and dark-fruit character and deeming it a "real Bordeaux." Wine Enthusiast and Vinous both awarded it 97 points, with the former praising its succulent fruits and rich tannins, while the latter emphasized its sumptuous and racy nature.

This exceptional vintage is produced by Pontet-Canet, a renowned producer in the Pauillac sub-region of Bordeaux. The wine is crafted from a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, and aged in a combination of new oak, terra cotta, and neutral oak.

Overall, the 2015 Pontet-Canet is a wine of immense quality and finesse. Its harmonious balance, powerful yet elegant nature, and potential for aging make it a true gem in the world of Bordeaux wines. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for years to come, this wine is sure to impress even the most discerning wine enthusiasts.
