This is a new offering from the producer, sparked by winemaker Elias Fernandez's desire to make a Merlot-based blend, rather than a varietal Merlot. It is an estate-grown blend of 56% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Malbec. Rich and concentrated, it's delightfully robust and vibrant, offering a mix of blackberry, blueberry and caramel chocolate flavors that finish in soft, integrated oak.

Merlot is at the core of TD-9, but Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec play important roles in the blend too. A rush of dark red cherry, pomegranate, spice and lavender lead into the voluptuous, racy finish. There is still some tannin that needs time to resolve, but this is a fabulous debut from Shafer. The TD-9 replaces the Merlot in the Shafer lineup and looks like it will be a more ambitious wine. The name is taken after the TD-9 tractor John Shafer drove in his early days in Napa Valley.

Charming, light on its feet, and with the forward, sexy fruit of this great vintage, drink it anytime over the coming decade.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Red Blend TD-9, a blend of 56% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Malbec, reveals notes of warm plums, Christmas cake and mocha with hints of sandalwood and vanilla pod... Full-bodied and laden with spiced plum preserves flavors, it has just enough freshness and great length. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown

This is a ripe, rich, yet well balanced offering from Shafer. This is a wine that exudes class with the layers of silky black to red fruits which are enhanced by notes of Asian five spice and dried herbs. The tannins are wonderfully integrated, and plush, giving a persistent and unctuous texture. This is seamless and showing wonderfully even at this early stage, but promises a decade or more of pure drinking pleasure.

Shafer Vineyards

Shafer Vineyards is a family-owned and operated winery located in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley. It was founded in 1972 by John Shafer who left a 23-year career in the publishing industry to pursue a second career in wine. After purchasing a 210-acre estate, the family faced the arduous task of replanting the existing vineyards which dated back to the 1920s.

Evolving from grape growers to vintners, the Shafers crushed their first Cabernet grapes in 1978 and began construction on their winery a year later. The first Shafer Cabernet became a benchmark, winning the acclaimed San Francisco Vintners Club taste-off upon release and, over a decade later taking first place in an international blind tasting held in Germany, where it outranked such wines as Chateau Margaux, Chateau Latour and Chateau Palmer.

Doug Shafer became winemaker in 1983 after graduating from the University of California at Davis with a degree in enology and viticulture. A year later, Elias Fernandez joined the winery as assistant winemaker. Together Doug and Elias have worked closely to forge the Shafer style of quality, consistency and elegance.

New vineyards have been added over the years, with acreage acquired in the Oak Knoll, Stags Leap and Carneros districts, bringing the total Shafer vineyard acreage to over 200 acres. Winery facilities have been expanded and extensive caves carved into the hillside for aging wine.

In 1994, Elias was appointed winemaker, and Doug took over the reins as president when John became chairman of the board.
