One of the top Sauternes in this report is the 2016 Château Guiraud, a brilliant wine from a more challenging vintage for the Sauternes region. Beautiful, powerful notes of sugared peach, blood orange, caramelized...

Wine Enthusiast, April 2017

(WE94-96 points) This wine is hugely rich while having wonderful acidity at its end. Dense botrytis and a powerful structure go along with the honey and marmalade flavors. It will certainly age well and long.

Decanter, April 2017

Guiraud walks the line of minerality, florality and richness effectively for me. Lime juice oozes through, you can't hold it back, and your mouth responds. Succulent, with a well judged salinity. Very good. Read more...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2019

The 2016 Guiraud has a pale lemon color and opens with musk perfume, paraffin, cedar and spice box notes with a core of lemon tart, honey-drizzled white peaches and kumquat plus a waft of quince paste. The palate has...

Vinous, August 2020

The 2016 Guiraud has a very attractive, complex bouquet of lemon curd, orange blossom and light lanolin aromas that gently unfold in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with a spicy opening. This feels...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, January 2024

Bright, candied citrus rind, pineapples, mango, and honey-topped, oranges with caramel, flowers, and ginger accents. This is one of those Sauternes that can be paired with spicy meals, or, buttery seafood as it balances...

jamessuckling.com, February 2019

Masses of candied citrus and marzipan, plus a touch of mango chutney, make this full-bodied Sauternes easy to enjoy. Generous and succulent finish. Moderately sweet for this appellation. Drink or hold.

Wine Spectator, March 2019

This delivers a rather solid punch of glazed peach and mango flavors, with notes of white ginger and pear chutney on the juicy finish. Approachable, but no real rush. Best from 2021 through 2032. 5,000 cases made. — JM

Chateau Guiraud is in the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux. Originally known as the "Noble House of Bayle", it got its present name from Pierre Guiraud, a Bordeaux merchant who bought the property in 1766. In 1855, it was classified a Premier Grand Cru de Sauternes.

Chateau Guiraud extends over 128 hectares. 85 hectares are planted with Semillon (65%) and Sauvignon Blanc (35%) on a mixture of sandy gravel, clay, marl and limestone soil. The average age of the vines is 35-40 years. Harvest is done by hand in successive waves through the vineyard, picking only Botrytised berries. A minimum potential alcohol must be reached before the grapes are fermented in new oak barrels over three weeks to two months. The wine is then aged in barrels for at least 24 months before bottling.

Chateau Guiraud also produces a second wine, Petit Guiraud, a livelier and fresher version made from young vines, and a dry white wine made of ripe but not non-Botrytis grapes called G de Chateau Guiraud.

Guiraud’s enchanting bouquet of white flowers, acacia, hawthorn blossom, lily, and tuberose are complemented by overtones of forest floor, spice, freshly-ground white pepper, tea, and saffron. Guiraud is deliciously bodied, rich, and velvety on the palate. The fruity flavors are combined with an inimitable botrytis note and candied fruit character.
