This is slightly funky (from reduction), but has serious concentration and vivid acidity. The tannins from skin-fermentation are already beautifully integrated. Intense, super flinty finish. Drink or hold.

Nosiola is an old and ancient grape that faced almost certain extinction not too long ago. In the entire region of Trentino, a mere 400 hectares exist, and the Foradori family has long been among is most creative and vocal proponents. The 2016 Nosiola Fontanasanta sees fruit fermented in amphorae, where it remains in contact with the skins for six months. The wine opens to aromas of dried flowers, sage, candied lemon zest and dried apricot. It offers a mid-weight approach with long flavor persistence. - Monica Larner

Perfumed lemon flowers, lime, gladiolus (sword lily) and aromatic herbs on the captivating nose. Then fresh, precise and very juicy, with clean, penetrating flavors of fresh citrus fruit and peach, complemented by hints of botanical herbs. Finishes long and piercing, with a pretty floral return. If all wines treated with amphoras were this good, the wine category wouldn’t have the horrible reputation it does with many a wine expert and wine lover. -- Ian D'Agata
