jamessuckling.com, July 2019

This is another magical edition of Scrio; the crazy peppermint, rosemary, cypress and oregano perfumes should be enough to prove that. But then comes gravitas, in the form of pure blackcurrants and blackberries with...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, May 2019

The 2016 Scrio is a fruitier Syrah than the 2015, which was more about the pepper and the savory spice. The 2015 was broader, while this wine is more linear and classic. It boasts more depth and brings a lot of earthy...

Wine Enthusiast, May 2020

Cedar, cassis, camphor and French oak aromas lead the nose on this 100% Syrah. The full-bodied palate features ripe blackberry, raspberry jam, dark exotic spice, dried mint and espresso alongside tightly-knit fine-grained...

Wine & Spirits, February 2020

With scents of fresh violets and crushed black peppercorns, this pure syrah is reminiscent of a great Cornas. Its juicy plum and blackberry flavors take on notes of licorice and black spice with air, while ferrous...

Decanter, June 2019

Scrio is one of the few 100% Syrahs from Bolgheri and has great personality. Few similarities could be found with other Syrah from around the Mediterranean coasts. It's a floral expression with green pepper, spice and...

Wine Spectator, October 2020

Good varietal character marks this Tuscan Syrah, featuring flavors of blackberry, smoky bacon, wild herb and ink married to a firm, dense structure. Balanced and long, with iron and spice accents lingering. Best from 2021...

Le Macchiole is an estate in Bolgheri, Tuscany on the Etruscan Coast. Founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolini and Cinzia Merli, the estate has 24 hectares of organically farmed vineyards producing 5 single-variety wines: Paleo Bianco, Bolgheri Rosso, Paleo Rosso, Scrio and Messorio. It was a risky decision to produce single-varietal wines when neighbors such as Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Guado al Tasso were achieving world-renown for their Super Tuscan Bordeaux blends. But with commitment and determination, they achieved the esteem and recognition deserving of the series of their stunning wines.

Sadly, Eugenio passed away and did not live to see the result of his work but his legacy is continued by his wife Cinzia who works devotedly in the vineyards to demonstrate the purity and unique interpretation of Le Macchiole wines.
