Decanter,

A stunning dark-fruited wine, one of the best from the vintage. Just about everything you’d want in a great Montrose: a perfumed nose of violets and blackcurrants, pure fruit with a salty mineral savour, concentration and...

Wine Enthusiast, May 2019

While this wine's tannins are powerful. they are buried in a surprisingly soft texture of rich black fruits. With both structure and ripe blackberry flavors, the wine is already balanced. A juicy aftertaste lifts the...

Very pure, with lilac, violet, cassis, bitter cherry and damson plum notes streaming through in lockstep right from the start. A fine chalky underpinning gives the finish a sleek and racy edge. A beautifully precise wine...

Chateau Montrose is situated five kilometers north of Pauillac in Saint-Estephe, on a very well-drained and ideally exposed gravelly outcrop which runs for over a kilometer along the Gironde estuary. The 95-hectare (234-acre) vineyard surrounds the chateau, the winery, and the outbuildings, planted to a mix of grape varieties with Cabernet Sauvignon making up 60% of the vines, with parcels of Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (6%) and Petit Verdot (2%).

Succeeding three generations of the Charmolue family, Martin and Olivier Bouygues acquired Chateau Montrose in 2006. Acquiring a love of Montrose wines from their father, and keenly aware of the potential of its unique terroir, they decided to invest in their passion. Under their management, Montrose entered the 21st century with a spectacular reconstruction.

This great, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon wine is typical of the Saint-Estephe appellation. With rigorous selection in both the vineyard and the winery, Chateau Montrose is structured and tannic, yet possesses the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classe. With time, it develops a delicate and complex bouquet.

The best vintages of Montrose are exceptionally long-lived, with certain vintages (1921, 1929, 1982, 1990, and 2009) considered to be legendary. The blend is roughly equivalent to the vineyard plantings - 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, with the balance from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is matured for 18 months in 60% new oak barrels.

The 2016 Montrose Bordeaux Blend is an exemplary product of the esteemed Montrose winery in the distinguished region of Bordeaux, France, more specifically in the St Estephe sub-region. Emanating an air of elegance and refinement, this red wine is beautifully encased in a cork closure, signifying its traditional roots.

The Montrose has earned a reputation for its aroma that is both floral and fresh. The mesmerizing bouquet of roses and lilacs is complemented by the purity of cab aromas, showcasing blackcurrants and blackberries that are truly unforgettable. The palate unveils a full-bodied, deep, and profound profile, flaunting ultra-fine tannins that are polished and fine-grained. The finish lingers, subtly unveiling superb fruitiness that speaks of precision and form.

A celebration of both power and elegance, the Montrose Bordeaux Blend is full-bodied, concentrated, and deep. It embodies freshness and longevity, with a distinct tobacco leaf and Asian spice quality that adds an intriguing complexity to the wine. This wine is not for immediate consumption, requiring the patience of 15 years to truly unfold its potential.

Critics and connoisseurs alike have lauded the 2016 Montrose for its extraordinary bouquet, incredible purity of fruit, vibrant and balanced palate, and great finish. With an alcohol content of 13.5%, this wine is a modern classic for Montrose, a testament to the winemaker’s skill and the region’s rich terroir. The 2016 Montrose Bordeaux Blend is truly a wine that will reward the patient and discerning wine enthusiast.
