jebdunnuck.com, August 2018

A deeper, darker color compared to the Mon Aïeul, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve des Deux Freres is also 100% Grenache that was completely destemmed and brought up all in wood, with 20% being new. This cuvée is...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, September 2018

I'm not typically a fan of Grenache aged in new, smaller oak vessels, but the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des 2 Freres works. It's 100% Grenache aged in new 300-liter barrels for 14-15 months. Vanilla and baking...

Wine Enthusiast, December 2019

Baked-plum and preserved-strawberry flavors are muted by shades of anise, pepper and smoke in this thick, muscle-bound wine. Made from 100% Grenache, it's a soft, mouthwatering sip that has welcome freshness on the...

Domaine Pierre Usseglio was founded in Chateauneuf-du-Pape by Pierre’s father, Francis in 1948. Pierre eventually took the reigns and, since 1999, his children have run the estate. The Domaine holds 15 small vineyard plots throughout the AOC, totaling 22 hectares. Only one of those hectares is planted to white grapes. The remainder, with a mix of rocky and sandy soils, represent approximately 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 6% Mourvedre, 5% Cinsault, 2% Counoise and 2% Muscardin. Domaine Pierre Usseglio makes three red wines and one white.

The 2016 Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Deux Freres is a remarkable wine that showcases the best of the Southern Rhone region in France. Made from a proprietary blend of grapes, this red wine has a deep, darker color compared to its counterpart, the Mon Aïeul. With an alcohol percentage of 16.5%, this wine is bold and powerful, yet retains a sense of elegance and grace.

Upon pouring, the 2016 Reserve des Deux Freres reveals aromas of crème de cassis, blackberries, and white flowers, enveloped by subtle nuances of candle wax, cured meats, and street market spices. These complex aromas create an enthralling sensory experience that captivates the senses.

On the palate, this wine is incredibly full-bodied, with deep flavors that mirror the bouquet. Waves of Christmas cake-like flavors flood the mouth, accompanied by hints of vanilla and baking spices imparted by the new, smaller oak vessels in which it was aged. Despite its richness, the wine maintains a refreshing acidity that balances out the plushness and provides a long, supple finish.

Renowned wine critic Jeb Dunnuck awarded this wine a perfect score of 100, praising its depth, power, and the elegance of its tannins. Similarly, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a score of 99, noting its unimaginable enveloping softness and freshness. Wine Enthusiast also recognized the wine's quality with a score of 92, highlighting its mouthwatering qualities and fine-grained tannins.

The 2016 Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Deux Freres is a wine that demands attention and appreciation. With its exceptional complexity and aging potential, it is a wine that will only continue to evolve and impress over the next two decades. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for the future, this wine is a true gem from the Rhone region.
