TheWineCellarInsider.com, September 2019

The depth of color is serious. On the nose, there is dark red fruits, licorice, smoke, herbs and espresso bean. The wine is clearly intense, and also lifted, which is very hard to do! The oak is better integrated than in...

The Wine Independent, December 2022

The 2016 Smith Haut Lafitte has a deep garnet color. It bursts onto the scene with dramatic notes of crème de cassis, blueberry compote, and chocolate-covered cherries, plus suggestions of star anise, lavender, and fallen...

The blackcurrant and blueberry aromas are lifted and beautiful. Lots of flowers, too, together with some mushroom and dried-flower undertones. Full-bodied with firm and very silky tannins giving a lovely texture. Bright...

Moving to the reds, the 2016 Château Smith Haut Lafitte checks in as 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot that spent 18 months in 60% new oak. It’s undeniably a more elegant, reserved...

Wine Enthusiast, March 2020

This hugely dense wine is complex and full of juicy, succulent, smoky Cabernet Sauvignon. The tannins are at the service of the fruits. The wine still has a long way to go before maturity. Don't think about drinking it...

Wine Spectator, March 2019

Quite ripe, with lush waves of cassis, cherry preserve and raspberry puree flavors gliding through in no hurry, but maintaining definition and cut along the way as bramble, tar and melted licorice snap notes slowly emerge...

The style of Smith-Haut-Lafitte red is classical, with a beautiful expression of Gunzian gravel terroir which gives it unique smoky notes. Elegant and structured, the red shows freshness, complexity, balance and richness.

The Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, harvested at full maturity and softly vinified to extract only the silkiest tannins, unveils its full potential after proper aging. The other grape varieties of the vineyard, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, add their own aromas and participate in the harmony of a great Cru Classe de Graves.

Galloni praises its rich, ample, and explosive character, noting the "tremendous energy and tension" that balance the dark, rich fruit. He highlights the "hints of lavender, spice, menthol, and crème de cassis," commending the wine's extraordinary balance and harmony.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate echoes these sentiments, also rating it 98. She describes the wine's "very deep garnet-purple color" and "sensuous scents of warm black cherries, blackberry pie, star anise, and fragrant lilacs." Perrotti-Brown emphasizes the wine's rich and seductive palate, filled with "perfumed black berry preserves and superbly plush tannins," and notes its long and beautifully layered finish.

Wine Spectator's James Molesworth gives the wine a 97, appreciating its ripe flavors of "cassis, cherry preserve, and raspberry puree," and the "intense echo of pastis and sweet tobacco" on the finish. He recommends drinking it between 2023 and 2038.

Jeb Dunnuck also rates it 97, describing it as "elegant, reserved" yet "full-bodied" with a "classic perfume of cassis, black currants, cold fireplace, wood smoke, and tobacco." He notes its potential to age well for 20-30 years.

Jeff Leve from TheWineCellarInsider.com provides an exceptional review, with a score of 99, calling it a "strong candidate for the best wine yet produced by the Cathiard family." He emphasizes the wine's "inky color," "layers of ripe fruit," and "velvet and silky texture."
