Ornellaia 2016 is a top example of this estate in Bolgheri and its legendary longevity will not betray it. Less extracted than in the past, it's more restrained yet perfectly ripe and with a great intensity of aromas. It opens up with spicy notes of clove and nutmeg, followed by brambly fruit and a kind of iodine mineral character in depth, finishing with an amazing length of tobacco. The super-fine, oaky style needs time to integrate with the firm yet velvety tannins and refreshing acidity.

This is a fantastic interpretation from Bolgheri. The 2016 Bolgheri Rosso Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is made with fruit from the same vineyard plots that go into the Bolgheri Superiore, only this is a second selection if you will. Generally speaking, fruit from the younger vines goes here. This wine gives us a very pretty glimpse of what we can expect of the high-end releases from this classic vintage. The fruit is rock solid, delineated, tonic and firm. The pleasure factor awarded here is very high thanks to the wine's inner softness, silky tannins and soothing extract. The bouquet is seamless and pristine. - Monica Larner

Showing beautifully, the incredibly impressive 2016 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia (44% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Petit Verdot, and 12% Cabernet Franc) is a true second wine from this estate, following the similar practice in Bordeaux of offering a second wine basically made from the grapes that didn't rate the top cuvee. Don't let that deter you, though, as this is a terrific wine. Its deep ruby color is followed by a ripe, complex bouquet of black cherries, blackberries, tobacco, and earthy, herbal characteristics. Gorgeous on the palate, with medium to full body, a wonderful freshness and purity, and silky tannins, it's already drinking nicely but will keep for 10-15 years.

Black cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, menthol, licorice and spice infuse this succulent, voluptuous Serre Nuove. The 2016 is a relatively accessible Serre Nuove that will drink well upon release, its considerable richness notwithstanding. The blend is 44% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 18% Petit Verdot. -- Antonio Galloni

Coming primarily from the Estate’s younger vineyards and made with the same passion and attention to detail as Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is a true “second wine”. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, it combines generosity and depth of flavor with an engaging and vibrant personality.

Grapes are hand-picked into small baskets, then double-sorted both before and after de-stemming. Every variety and block is vinified separately. Fermentation is stainless steel followed by 10 days of maceration on the skins.

The wine ages in oak barrels, 25% new, for about 12 months. The components are then blended and returned to barrels for another 3+ months of aging. After bottling, the wine matures and stabilizes in bottle for six months at the winery before release.

Le Serre Nuove releases are dark red with forward fruit, complemented by floral and savory notes. The body is medium-plus, with velvety texture and a long, persistently juicy finish.

Winery

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is a Bolgheri estate which lies in the heart of Tuscany's coastal region, Maremma, also home to Sassicaia. The estate is one of the icon wineries of Italy, producing some of the finest Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc in Tuscany, grown in the alluvial, volcanic, and marine-based soils which comprise the region’s terroir.

Founded by Marchese Lodovico Antinori in 1981, Ornellaia’s first vineyard plantings were in 1982 and the new winery started operations with the 1985 vintage. Robert Mondavi and Marchesi de' Frescobaldi became co-owners of the estate in 2002, but since 2005, the estate has been exclusively owned by Marchesi de' Frescobaldi.

Grapes which are not designated for the winery’s flagship Bordeaux-styled release Ornellaia, one of the first Super Tuscans, are "declassified" to the production of Le Serre Nuove, which usually has more Merlot, and sees less oak influence. The winery produces several other labels, including Le Volte, a blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as a Sauvignon Blanc, Poggio alla Gazze, and Ornus, a sweet, late harvest wine from Petit Manseng.

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia also owns the Masseto winery and estate, which produces an equally world-renowned and lauded single-vineyard Merlot.
