Tignanello is produced exclusively from the vineyard of the same name, a parcel of some 140 acres (57 hectares) with limestone-rich soils and a southwestern exposure at 1150-1325 feet (350-400 meters) above sea level at the Tignanello estate.

It was the first Sangiovese wine to be aged in small oak barrels, the first modern red wine in the region to use such non-traditional varieties as Cabernet in the blend, and among the first red wines from the Chianti Classico area to be produced without white grapes.

The wine, originally called "Chianti Classico Riserva vigneto Tignanello" (a Chianti Classico Riserva from the Tignanello vineyard), was produced for the first time from a single vineyard parcel in 1970, when the blend contained 20% of Canaiolo and 5% of Trebbiano and Malvasia, both white grapes, and the wine aged in small oak barrels.

In 1971, it became a Tuscan red table wine rather than a Chianti Classico and was called Tignanello. In the 1975 vintage, the percentage of white grapes was definitively eliminated from the blend. Ever since 1982, the blend has been the one currently used. Tignanello is bottled only in favorable vintages, and was not produced in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1984, 1992, and 2002.

The 2017 Antinori Tignanello IGT is a proprietary red blend from Tuscany, Italy, produced by the renowned Antinori estate. This vintage has garnered significant acclaim from professional reviewers, with scores ranging from 93 to 97 points.

Decanter awarded it a score of 95, noting the wine's "forward plum and cherry aromas," complemented by "black pepper, clove," and floral notes typical of the Chianti Classico area, such as orris and violet. On the palate, it reveals darker tones with "chocolate notes with a balsamic character" and a "delicate coconut finish." The review emphasizes the wine’s "firm acidity and compact tannins," attributing its balance to an "amazing concentration of fruit."

James Suckling gave this vintage a score of 96, highlighting its density and precision. He describes it as a "dense, really pinpointed red with plums and hazelnuts," adding that it is "full-bodied and very polished with fine, creamy tannins and a long, flavorful finish." He also commends its finesse and suggests it will be even better after 2023.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also rated it 96, calling it a "dark, exuberant and inviting wine." The review praises the "symphony of dark fruit with black cherry, plum, spice, and sweet tobacco." The reviewer was particularly captivated by a "distant hint of medicinal or menthol herb" and a "drying mineral note of crushed chalk." The 2017 vintage’s heat and dryness have intensified its aromatic profile, while the mouthfeel remains "carefully crafted to maintain its softness and smoothness."

Vinous, giving it 95+ points, noted the wine's initial generosity but observed that it has since become "incredibly tight." The review mentions "bright red berry fruit, mint, chalk, and lifted floral notes," highlighting the need for patience as the wine continues to develop.

Wine Spectator provided a score of 93, describing the wine as "a bit shy in aroma today," with flavors of "plum, black cherry, earth, sanguine, and toasty oak." They noted its muscular and dense structure, recommending it be enjoyed from 2022 through 2035.

Finally, Wine Enthusiast rated the wine 97 points, praising its "aromas of cassis, menthol, blue flower, and pipe tobacco." The palate is described as "delicious, elegantly structured," with flavors of "dried black cherry, ripe blackberry, licorice, and vanilla," framed by "taut, fine-grained tannins."

Overall, the 2017 Antinori Tignanello IGT is a highly-regarded wine with a complex profile and excellent aging potential.
