The aromas suggest it will be buxom, but the wine is pleasingly restrained, with mineral detail—an ideal match for shrimp scampi. (850 cases) —P.J.C.

Lifted and perfumed, the Viognier is especially airy and gracious in 2017. Sweet floral notes, apricot and tropical overtones all develop, but the Calera Viognier mostly stands out for its elegant, restrained personality. The 2017 was aged 65% in oak and 35% in concrete. -- Antonio Galloni

There is a toasty core to the sip, where seared melon and orange-peel flavors meet with sea salt and brioche. MATT KETTMANN

There’s a metallic steel-wool aroma that combines with passionfruit and apple blossom to create a heady, intriguing mix that is in no way blousy or overly plush. Zippy grapefruit acidity and tropical notes continue to the finish.
