The palate has a very sapid and assertive, red-cherry core with a brand of tannin that is so forthright and so pure and linear. This has power and focus and needs some time. Best from 2024.

It has a deep, layered, powerful yet elegant style as well as notes of black raspberries, crushed violets, blueberries, ground pepper, and earth. With a rounded, sexy texture, no hard edges, fine tannins, and a beautiful finish, it's a fabulous wine in the vintage.

Sourced from 75-year-old vines, it's a powerful but freshly balanced red packed with lip-smacking blueberry and boysenberry flavors framed by fine, chalky tannins. Delightful now but should improve through 2030 and hold further. ANNA LEE C. IIJIMA

Powerful, spice-accented cherry, boysenberry, allspice and candied lavender qualities on the deeply perfumed nose. Lush red and blue fruit preserve, licorice, succulent herb and floral pastille flavors smoothly blend depth and energy and are supported by a core of juicy acidity. The floral and spice notes return on an impressively long, subtly chewy finish framed by sneaky tannins. -- Josh Raynolds

A bit herbal on the nose, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers flavors of strawberries, cherries and garrigue. A blend of 85% Grenache, 5% Mourvèdre, 4% each Bourboulenc and Syrah and 2% Cinsault, it's full-bodied, creamy and lush—a solid effort in an elegant, red fruited style unmarked by new oak.- JC
