Mazoyères seems to have fared better in the hot conditions of 2017 than neighbouring Charmes-Chambertin, as this wine has more acidity and depth than its stablemate, with good tension and depth with layers of sappy, chalky, dark berry fruit.

Both vineyards were planted in 1948 (though some of the Charmes replanted in 1978) while there is much more clay in the topsoil of the Mazoyères. A little bit denser and darker, with a firmer spicier fruit on the nose, started savoury then plumps up very nicely thereafter. Romain finds floral notes here, especially with ageing. Certainly darker fruit and more depth, with a lovely balance at the finish. Tasted: November 2018.

Fragrant scents of raspberry and crushed strawberry billow from the glass; that subtle black truffle aroma remains intact, and there are hints of warm embers/ash in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, a little spicier than I recollect and conspicuously becoming more pixelated with aeration. As I remarked from barrel, a "serious" Mazoyères-Chambertin. -- Neal Martin
