Wine Enthusiast, September 2023

Hearty and full-bodied, this black cherry and blackberry-scented wine is braced by moderate tannins and good acidity for a sense of freshness despite its big size. Best from 2025-2035. — Jim Gordon

Heitz Wine Cellars is located in the eastern hills of Napa Valley’s St. Helena. The original winery was founded by Joe and Alice Heitz in 1961. They purchased their first vineyard, 8 acres, just south of St. Helena that was mostly planted with Grignolino. In 1964 , they acquired their 160-acre ranch and winery in Spring Valley where Joe focused on Cabernet Sauvignon. The following year they made a serendipitous connection with Tom and Martha May who owned the famous Martha’s Vineyard.

After a handshake deal firm enough to last decades and a single harvest of the May’s remarkable Cabernet grapes, Joe and Alice Heitz gained exclusive lease on Martha’s Vineyard. In 1966, Joe crafted the first Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon - a wine so remarkable that the two families decided to add a vineyard designation to the Heitz Cellars' label, initiating that concept in the Napa Valley.

Heitz has expanded their agricultural operations to encompass 1,100 acres of vineyards located throughout Napa Valley's finest winemaking appellations and has planted grapes on 425 of those acres. Their portfolio of wines included not only their signature Cabernets, but also Chardonnay, Zinfandel and their inherited specialty, Grignolino.

Amidst the myriad of wines being swirled in the Napa Valley today, the legacy of Joe and Alice Heitz continues to stand out. Second generation Kathleen Heitz Myers and David Heitz are now at the helm as president and winemaker. Both have been instrumental in the development of Heitz Cellars' reputation for excellence since the 1970s.

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to the exquisite 2017 Heitz Cabernet Sauvignon Trailside Vineyard. This remarkable red wine hails from the esteemed Napa appellation in California's prestigious North Coast region. Crafted by the renowned Heitz winery, this Cabernet Sauvignon is a true gem that showcases the region's exceptional winemaking prowess.

In the glass, the wine displays a deep, alluring red color that hints at its richness and complexity. Aromas of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and cassis immediately greet the nose, accompanied by subtle notes of cedar, tobacco, and vanilla. With each swirl, the bouquet becomes more pronounced, captivating your senses and inviting you to delve deeper into its depths.

On the palate, this Cabernet Sauvignon truly shines. The luscious fruit flavors continue to dazzle, unveiling layers of blackcurrant, plum, and blackberry jam. Velvety tannins lend structure and elegance to the wine, while a touch of acidity keeps the palate refreshed and the flavors vibrant. As the wine lingers on the tongue, hints of dark chocolate and espresso emerge, adding a seductive complexity that is both indulgent and satisfying.

The 2017 Heitz Cabernet Sauvignon Trailside Vineyard is a prime example of the exceptional quality that can be achieved in Napa. Its impeccable balance, intense flavors, and luxurious texture make it a truly exceptional wine. This is a wine that demands attention and deserves to be savored on its own or paired with hearty dishes such as grilled ribeye steak or slow-roasted lamb. With its impeccable craftsmanship and undeniable charm, this wine is sure to delight even the most discerning of palates. Cheers to a wine that embodies the very essence of Napa's winemaking heritage!
