Caparzo's Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Vigna la Casa was first produced in 1977. At the time little was known of terroir, and little attention was paid to the concept of zoning, which had only recently been introduced to Montalcino. In this case Caparzo was once again a pace setter, producing a “single vineyard” Brunello from one of the finest vineyards in the appellation.

With Brunello di Montalcino La Casa, Caparzo was also one of the first wineries to introduce barriques to Montalcino, producing a wine with a polite, elegant spirit. Brunello di Montalcino Vigna La Casa is the fruit of a unique terroir, and expresses all of Caparzo's passion and experience in producing excellent wines.

The 2018 Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino la Casa showcases the Sangiovese Grosso varietal from the Tuscany region of Italy, specifically from the Brunello di Montalcino sub-region. This red wine, produced by Caparzo, has garnered a range of reviews from various professional wine reviewers, highlighting its distinctive characteristics and quality.

Decanter awarded this wine a score of 91, noting that Caparzo's Montosoli vineyards were spared from botrytis in 2018, leading to a well-balanced ripeness for the vintage. "It leads with mature aromas of coffee, cherry compote, and sweet tobacco," Decanter states, adding that the wine features "luxurious, supple fruit flavors" that integrate oak nuances of nutmeg and vanilla, finishing with "chocolatey, chewy tannins" (Decanter, 11/10/2022).

James Suckling gave the wine an outstanding score of 96, describing it as having "lots of blue and sweet berry fruit with heady rose and floral notes on the nose, alongside hot chocolate, sandalwood, toffee, and nutmeg." He praises its "ripe, muscular tannins" and "long, graceful finish," suggesting it will be even better from 2024 (jamessuckling.com, 12/11/2022).

Jeb Dunnuck also rated the wine 91, pointing out its "sheen of oak spice" and flavors of "toasted cedar, vanilla bean, black cherry candy, and Mediterranean herbs." He notes the wine's full-bodied structure and advises drinking it between 2024 and 2030 (jebdunnuck.com, 3/6/2023).

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded a score of 93, emphasizing the vineyard's scenic beauty and the wine's aging process in oak for two years. The review mentions flavors of "dark fruit and plum" with "soft tannins and even a hint of oaky sweetness" (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 3/10/2023).

Wine Spectator gave a high score of 95, commenting on the wine's "graphite and oak spice aromas" and its "dense, with firm yet polished tannins" structure, finishing with a "long, complex aftertaste" (Wine Spectator, 6/30/2023).

Vinous rated the wine 94, describing it as "a beguiling mix of exotic spice, balsam herbs, crushed ashen stones and dried black cherries." They highlight the wine's "silken wave of ripe dark fruits" and "fine-grained tannins" (Vinous, 12/1/2022).

Overall, the 2018 Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino la Casa is a well-regarded wine with a range of complex flavors and aromas, praised for its balance, structure, and aging potential.
