(97+ points) Like in 2019, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill is more impressive than the winery's other offerings. It's an impressively dark-fruited, cassis-laden effort that's rich, full-bodied and framed by wonderfully velvety tannins that widen out into a long, licorice-tinged finish. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill is dark and explosive in the glass, with real energy driving the blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, licorice and chocolate flavors. Deep and substantial, the Volcanic Hill offers a striking combination of the virile power this wine is known for but with the slightly soft contours of the year. From the largest of the site's distinct blocks at eight acres, this wine consists of Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot as well as the star of the show. From light, fluffy soils, it shares that airiness and soft sophistication on the palate, offering earthy dried herb, bay leaf and stone within a context of cassis and blackberry richness that endures through integrated yet youthful tannin.
