Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2020

As usual, the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin displays more red fruit than the main bottling, being 100% Grenache from sandier soils. Raspberries and cherries appear on the nose alongside subtle hints of garrigue. The...

Wine Spectator, October 2020

This bursts forth with delicious crushed plum, cherry puree and raspberry coulis notes that stretch out slowly through the lengthy, anise- and black tea–infused finish. Not shy with its fruit, but this has more than...

Decanter, February 2021

This is one of the best wines of the vintage. It has a vinous finesse to the aromatics, full-bodied, very smooth and generous. It very much displays a pure Grenache style, with a great finesse to the tannins and purity of...

Another wine that displays the vintage profile, the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin reveals a translucent medium ruby color as well as pure Grenache notes of kirsch and strawberry fruits intermixed with lots of...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, October 2020

Produced from 100% old vine Grenache, the wine is spicy, medium-bodied, smoky, elegant, round and loaded with lush, but refined red fruits. Give this a few years in the cellar and it should fill out nicely. Read more...

Vinous, October 2021

Brilliant ruby. A highly expressive bouquet evokes Chambord, cherry cola, smoky minerals and licorice, and a floral note builds as the wine opens up. Sappy, penetrating and energetic in style, offering palate-staining...

Domaine de la Janasse, in the Southern Rhone, was founded in 1967 by Aime Sabon. Having returned from military service, he took over management of the family vineyards and formed an estate label, named after the family farm in the locality of “La Janasse”. A cellar was built in 1973 and new plots were acquired, growing the total holdings from 15 hectares to more than 90 today.

In 1991, after earning diplomas in viticulture, oenology and marketing, Aime’s son Christophe Sabon was given the keys to the cellar. His sister Isabelle joined the team in 2001.

La Janasse grows all 13 permissible grapes in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation to give complexity and depth to their different wines. They produce 3 red and 2 white Chateauneuf du Pape wines, red, white and rose Cotes-du-Rhone, and a number of IGP wines.

The 2018 Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin is a truly exceptional wine that showcases the finesse and elegance of Grenache. With its deep red color and enticing aromatics, this wine captivates from the moment it is poured.

On the nose, there is a vinous finesse that is simply enchanting. The aromas are full-bodied, smooth, and generous, exuding notes of ripe red fruits, such as kirsch and raspberry, accompanied by hints of Provençal garrigue and toasted spices. There is a purity to the fruit that is truly remarkable.

The palate of this Cuvee Chaupin is voluminous and silky, with a lovely superfine tannic weave that feels like satin on the tongue. The wine displays a great finesse to the tannins, which are well-integrated and provide structure without overwhelming the delicate flavors. The acidity is well-balanced, adding freshness and vibrancy to the wine. It has an inner sucrosité, a delightful sweetness that adds depth and complexity to the overall profile.

This wine can be enjoyed in its youth for its finesse and immediate pleasure, or it can be cellared for further development. Partially destemmed pure Grenache grapes from carefully selected vineyards, including lieux-dits Chapouin, La Janasse, and La Crau, were used to craft this cuvée. The oldest vines were planted as far back as 1912, adding a sense of history and tradition to the wine.

Notable wine critics have praised this wine for its excellence. Decanter awarded it a score of 94, describing it as one of the best wines of the vintage. jebdunnuck.com also awarded it a score of 94, highlighting its seamless texture and mid-palate depth. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it a score of 95, praising its red fruit character and impressive finish.

The 2018 Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin is a true gem from the Rhone region of France. It is a wine that exudes elegance, complexity, and longevity. Whether consumed now or laid down for future enjoyment, this wine is sure to impress even the most discerning of wine enthusiasts.
