Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, November 2020

Tasted from vat, the Fattoria le Pupille 2018 Poggio Valente is an elegant expression of Sangiovese with just a hint of the freewheeling wildness that characterizes the Maremma region of southern Tuscany. The wine...

Vinous, July 2022

The 2018 Poggio Valente is a very pretty, open-knit wine. The aromatics are especially inviting. Sweet pipe tobacco, dried cherry, mint, anise, cinnamon and dried flowers lend notable presence to this decidedly mid-weight...

Wine Spectator, October 2021

Rich and spicy, evoking plum, cherry, sandalwood and cigar box aromas and flavors. Though solidly built, this is also fluid, echoing spice notes on the finish. Best from 2022 through 2033. 1,700 cases made, 400 cases...

Fattoria Le Pupille, located in the Maremma region of Tuscany, is a leading winery owned by Elisabetta Geppetti, the Ambassador of Maremma and called the Lady of Morellino. As a young student, Elisabetta had foreseen great productive potential in the countryside she loved, and armed with her enthusiasm and love of wine which she inherited from her grandfather, she embarked on a journey to transform her family’s small wine estate into what it is today: 175+ acres of vineyards, more than 500,000 bottles made every year and presence in the markets of four continents.

The core of the property is around the village of Pereta surrounded by 65 acres of vineyard that include 12 acres which give life to the winery’s legendary wine: Saffredi. With the support of Italian wine legend Giacomo Tachis, she replanted Cabernet Sauvignon on a few vines of Sangiovese, which in 1985 started bearing fruit, giving birth to a project that has made the winery the true pioneer of Maremma.

The operating nucleus of the property, from early 2000, is in proximity of Istia d’Ombrone near Grosseto. The winery is an antique farmhouse surrounded by a 30-acre vineyard, including a small patch dedicated to Sangiovese grapes coming from ancient vine rows.

The Le Pupille vineyards are planted to 70% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera and Alicante, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, 2% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. There are 23 acres of vineyards for the white grape varieties: Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

The 2018 Fattoria Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano Poggio Valente is a captivating red wine that showcases the elegance and complexity of Sangiovese. With its deep red color and enticing aromas, this wine is a true expression of the Tuscany region in Italy.

Upon pouring, the wine reveals itself with a profound red hue that is both alluring and inviting. The nose is greeted with a symphony of scents, including tobacco, leather, cinnamon, cassis, black and red currants, and hints of smoke. These aromas intertwine harmoniously, creating a bouquet that is both complex and restrained.

On the palate, the Poggio Valente displays a full body that is balanced with sweet fruit and noble tannins. The flavors of plums, berries, cherries, currants, and subtle notes of vanilla and hazelnuts dance across the taste buds, showcasing the purity and finesse of the Sangiovese grape. The wine is medium-to-full-bodied, with refined tannins that add structure and elegance to the overall profile. It culminates in a clean, fruity finish that lingers on the palate, leaving a lasting impression.

The 2018 Poggio Valente has garnered high praise from wine critics. Decanter awarded it an impressive 95 points, commending its complexity and clean flavors. James Suckling also lauded this wine, giving it a score of 94 and praising its balance, focus, and drinkability. Wine Spectator awarded it 92 points, noting its richness, spiciness, and fluidity. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also recognized the wine's elegance and wildness, giving it a score of 94. Vinous, too, praised its inviting aromatics and well-balanced nature, giving it a score of 92.

Overall, the 2018 Fattoria Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano Poggio Valente is a remarkable red wine that embodies the essence of Tuscany. It is a wine that can be enjoyed now but also has the potential to age gracefully. Whether savored on its own or paired with a hearty Italian meal, this wine is sure to delight wine enthusiasts with its depth, complexity, and sheer elegance.
