(94-95 points) I can’t remember a Haut-Batailley this tannic, yet the tannins are savory and very ripe with beauty and purity. Full-bodied, chewy tannins and a long and intense finish.

The flagship 2018 Château Haut-Batailley checks in 59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Merlot that was brought up in 60% new French oak. It's another deeply hued, classic Pauillac in the vintage that has wonderful purity as...

Dark, big and bold, with layers of crisp Cabernet Sauvignon character, you also find bitter chocolate, espresso, cigar wrapper and herbs. Full-bodied, tannic and concentrated, the wine is rich, juicy, chewy and long. The...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2019

(92 - 94 points) Blended of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Merlot aging in 60% new barriques, the 2018 Haut Batailley is very deep purple-black in color and takes some coaxing to reveal profound notes of dark chocolate...

Wine Spectator, January 2021

Juicy, fresh and nicely compact, with sleek iron along the edges of a core of steeped plum and cassis fruit flavors. Subtle tugs of savory, tobacco and cedar through the finish, with a last, lingering perfumed whiff of...

Decanter, April 2019

This is a lovely wine from the second vintage under Lynch Bages’ ownership, full of power and poise and controlled precision. It has a slightly unusual blend owing to a greater proportion of Merlot than has been used in...

janeanson.com, November 2023

A bigger vintage than 2017, which translates into a more powerful and structured wine - helped also no doubt by the influence of the new team. For drinking now, I would suggest the 2017 vintage, but this is great quality...

The 2018 Haut-Batailley has a delightful bouquet with blackberry, wild strawberry, cedar and light tobacco scents, easily handling the precocity of the growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a...

Chateau Haut-Batailley is a Left Bank Bordeaux wine property that was originally part of Chateau Batailley, a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification. Jointly owned by Francis and Marcel Borie, they divided the estate between them in 1942.

Marcel took the Batailley half, including the chateau. The smaller part went to Francis who purchased additional vineyard land from Chateau Duhart-Milon to increase the size of his Haut Batailley vineyards. Now managed by Francois-Xavier Borie, Chateau Haut-Batailley is part of the Borie family of estates that includes Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou and Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste.

The 22 hectares of Chateau Haut-Batailley are on a gently sloping outcrop at the southern edge of Pauillac. They are planted with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc on exceptional soils of deep gravel and alluvial stones. This ensures excellent drainage of rainwater and encourages deep roots. The average age of the vines is 35 years old.

In 2005, Francois-Xavier Borie began a major program of construction, building a modern vat house, new harvest facilities and a bottling room, all in harmony with the pre-existing decor.

Chateau Haut-Batailley is a Bordeaux blend dominated by a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted both before and after de-stemming.

Prior to fermentation, the grapes undergo a long, cool maceration of three weeks. When fermentation is complete, the wines age from 16 to 18 month in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new.

The 2018 Haut Batailley is a Bordeaux Blend that hails from the Pauillac region of Bordeaux, France. This red wine exudes elegance and refinement, showcasing the classic characteristics of a Pauillac with its deep hue and wonderful purity. With a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Merlot, this wine offers a complex and harmonious flavor profile.

Upon pouring, the 2018 Haut Batailley reveals a deep purple-black color that catches the eye. The nose is immediately captivated by the enticing aromas of ripe blackberry and currant fruits, accompanied by hints of graphite, cedarwood, and tobacco. These aromas create an alluring bouquet that invites you to indulge in a sensory journey.

On the palate, this wine truly shines. It is medium to full-bodied, showcasing a rich and velvety texture that coats the palate with layers of black fruit flavors. Macerated black cherries, blueberries, and fresh figs take center stage, supported by notes of pressed violets. The supple tannins provide a gentle grip on the entry and lead to a well-rounded and balanced finish.

The 2018 Haut Batailley is a wine that displays both power and finesse. It has been aged in 60% new French oak, which adds a subtle background oak note to the overall flavor profile. With a pH of 3.61, the acidity is nicely balanced, enhancing the wine's freshness and allowing it to fan out beautifully on the finish.

This pure and classic Pauillac is a wine that will reward patience. While it can certainly be enjoyed in its youth, it is recommended to cellar it for 7-8 years to allow the tannins to further integrate and the flavors to fully develop. However, if you can't resist the temptation, it will still offer immense pleasure even at an earlier stage.

With a 14.5% alcohol percentage, the 2018 Haut Batailley is a wine that exudes power and intensity. It is a wine that will age gracefully for over two decades, promising an exceptional drinking experience for those who appreciate the finest expressions of Bordeaux.
