Lots of flowers, blueberries and orange peel. The palate is really long and extended, with ultra-fine tannins that run the length of the wine. Medium to full body. Wonderful finish. Needs five to six years to open, but...

Wine Spectator, September 2022

This wine's main themes are plum, blackberry and black cherry flavors, with perfumed aromas and earth, iron, tobacco and dried herb accents. Dense, firm and dry on the finish, where a green, herbal element echoes. This is...

Decanter, June 2021

According to Cinzia Merli, producer of Le Macchiole, 2018 vintage is not her favourite. 'We can't compare it with the more red fruited 2017 and the concentration of 2019 is another matter,' she said. Having said that...

jebdunnuck.com, January 2023

There is a more reserved aromatic profile initially with the 2018 Messorio, but it is no less complex and unfolds with layers with wet stone, fresh herbes de Provence, red plum, red raspberry, and menthol. The palate is...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, October 2021

Le Macchiole's 2018 Messorio is soft and rich with impressive depth and intensity, all delivered with the softness that only the Merlot grape can manage. This important wine unfolds first to rich cherry and blackberry and...

The 2018 Messorio is an attractive wine, but it also feels like the most marked by the cooler style of the year. Readers will find a mid-weight Messorio endowed with striking inner sweetness and perfume, if not quite the...

Le Macchiole is an estate in Bolgheri, Tuscany on the Etruscan Coast. Founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolini and Cinzia Merli, the estate has 24 hectares of organically farmed vineyards producing 5 single-variety wines: Paleo Bianco, Bolgheri Rosso, Paleo Rosso, Scrio and Messorio. It was a risky decision to produce single-varietal wines when neighbors such as Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Guado al Tasso were achieving world-renown for their Super Tuscan Bordeaux blends. But with commitment and determination, they achieved the esteem and recognition deserving of the series of their stunning wines.

Sadly, Eugenio passed away and did not live to see the result of his work but his legacy is continued by his wife Cinzia who works devotedly in the vineyards to demonstrate the purity and unique interpretation of Le Macchiole wines.

The 2018 Le Macchiole Merlot Messorio is a true gem from the renowned Bolgheri region in Tuscany, Italy. This exceptional red wine showcases the mastery and dedication of the esteemed producer, Le Macchiole. With its deep red color and elegant label, it is a wine that commands attention from the moment it is poured.

Made exclusively from the Merlot varietal, this wine is a celebration of the grape's inherent qualities. The 2018 vintage was particularly favorable, allowing the grapes to fully ripen and develop their rich flavors. On the nose, enchanting aromas of ripe blackberries, plums, and cherries dance with hints of vanilla and tobacco. It is a symphony of scents that captivates the senses and hints at the wine's complexity.

On the palate, the 2018 Le Macchiole Merlot Messorio delivers a velvety texture that caresses the tongue. The tannins are beautifully integrated, providing structure and balance to the wine. Flavors of dark chocolate, blackcurrants, and espresso unfold, accompanied by subtle notes of spice and leather. The wine's impressive depth and concentration are a testament to the meticulous vineyard management and winemaking techniques employed by Le Macchiole.

With a long and lingering finish, this Merlot leaves a lasting impression. It is a wine that can be enjoyed now, but also has the potential for further aging to reveal even more nuances and complexity. Whether paired with a succulent steak or savored on its own, the 2018 Le Macchiole Merlot Messorio is a wine that will not disappoint.

In conclusion, the 2018 Le Macchiole Merlot Messorio is a true masterpiece from Tuscany. Its impeccable craftsmanship, captivating aromas, and luscious flavors make it a standout in the world of red wines. This is a wine that demands attention and admiration, and is sure to leave a lasting impression on any wine connoisseur fortunate enough to experience it.
