Galatrona is Petrolo's flagship and one of the most awarded wines of the estate. It is a wine of great structure on the palate, and wildly aromatic on the nose. First produced in 1994, this 100% Merlot comes from estate vines planted in the early 90’s. The vineyard extends over 3 hectares, and is the first vineyard of Merlot that Petrolo planted. The yield per vine is limited, allowing for the concentration of components fundamental to achieve the structure, elegance, balance and persistence wanted for this wine.

Macerated on the skins for 2 weeks or more, the pump-overs are done often and with considerable care to allow for complete and gentle extraction. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barriques, and the wine is then aged in new French barriques for approximately 18 months. During this period the wine is left for the first 6 months on the fine lees, which allows the finished product to achieve greater complexity.

The 2018 Petrolo Galatrona IGT Merlot is a distinguished red wine from Tuscany, Italy, produced by Petrolo. This wine is crafted entirely from Merlot grapes and carries a 14.5% alcohol content. With its recent transition from IGT status to the Val d'Arno di Sopra appellation, the Galatrona is gaining recognition in the competitive Tuscan wine landscape.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate also rated it highly with 97 points, describing it as a "beautifully soft and supple expression" with notes of "dark fruit, cherry, blackberry, tobacco, spice and smoked cedar wood." The review emphasizes the wine's balance and precision, noting that it showcases the depth of Tuscan Merlot without heaviness.

Decanter matched this score, lauding its seductive finesse and complexity. They noted the wine's "grip and smoked swirls of grilled oak," appreciating the "confidence" it exudes. They also highlighted its organic certification since 2016 and the influence of the late Denis Durantou on its production.

Vinous, with a score of 96, remarked on the Galatrona's elegance and nuance, pointing out flavors of "black cherry, chocolate, game, leather, licorice, and spice." This reflects its refined nature, distinguishing it from other impactful wines.

Lastly, Wine Spectator gave it 93 points, describing it as "rich" and "charming," with flavors of "blackberry and black cherry" alongside notes of "fresh herbs, green olive, and smoky oak." The wine's lingering finish and confident character were noted as standout features.
