(98-100) The 2018 Petrus is a brilliant wine that has perfection written all over it, and it’s unquestionably one of the most powerful, opulent wines in the vintage. As always, it’s 100% Merlot and offers a heavenly...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2021

The 2018 Petrus has retained its opaque purple-black color after bottling, foreshadowing the seemingly frozen-in-time glacial pace at which this wine is proceeding. It opens very reluctantly, requiring considerable air...

An extremely exotic red wine with crushed berries and a bouquet of flowers. So aromatic and perfumed. Full bodied and layered with lots of pretty oak, enticing fruit and tannins. Velvety. Best after 2028.

Clear flesh to the plump damson fruits, alongside grilled caramel, graphite, cassis bud and cocoa bean. The tannins are plentiful, but they are plush, ripe and flexible, and as such are full of Pomerol signature. As it...

In a vintage that favoured Merlot, it's hard to ignore that Petrus should be on your list of wines to lay down. You won't even have to wait as long as in years such as 2016 or 2019 for this Petrus to come around, as the...

Little known 50 years ago, Petrus has become mythical for the uniqueness of its wine. The wine’s inimitability is due to many factors. Among them is an exceptional terroir—located 40 meters above sea level, the highest point of the appellation—with a layer of heavy clay soil and an iron subsoil.

These are ideal conditions for the expression of the Merlot grape and the iron-rich clay is relatively unique within the region. As a result, the 28 acre vineyard is planted only to Merlot. Average vine age is more than 50 years, and are allowed to reach 70 years before replanting.

The approach in the vineyard and cellar is traditional and respectful of the special terroir. The viticulture is fastidious—severe pruning in the winter, regular ploughing, crop-thinning, de-leafing, manicuring the clusters in the summer—and allows perfect ripening of the fruit. Grapes are manually harvested over just two days and sorted before crush.

Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix purchased half a share of Petrus in the early 1960s and are largely credited with its rise to fame. The company also owns many other properties in both Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, including Magdelaine, Belair-Monange, La Fleur-Petrus, Lafleur-Gazin, Lagrange, Latour a Pomerol, Hosanna, and Trotanoy.

Fermentation for Petrus is carried out gently, without any over extraction, in temperature controlled concrete tanks. The blend, typically pure Merlot, is defined in December and the wine is aged 18+ months in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new.

Petrus displays an intense color, a rich and complex nose and an opulent fruit. In great vintages, the wine can easily be kept 25 years or more.

The 2018 Petrus is a truly exceptional wine that embodies the essence of Bordeaux. Hailing from the prestigious Pomerol region in France, this red Bordeaux blend is a masterpiece crafted by the renowned producer, Petrus.

In the glass, the wine exhibits a deep, opaque purple-black color, hinting at the intensity and complexity that awaits. With a 14.5% alcohol content, it exudes power and richness from the very first sip.

On the nose, this wine is an aromatic symphony, with crushed berries and a captivating bouquet of flowers. The aroma is incredibly exotic and perfumed, inviting you to explore further. As you delve deeper, you will discover layers of pretty oak, enticing fruit, and velvety tannins.

The palate of the 2018 Petrus is a revelation. It is full-bodied and impeccably balanced, showcasing the supreme quality of Pomerol's Merlots in this vintage. The ripe tannins harmoniously blend with fine acidity, creating a seamless texture that caresses the senses. The flavors are dominated by perfectly ripe black and blue fruits, exotic spices, and earthy undertones.

This wine has garnered high praise from esteemed wine critics. James Suckling awarded it an impressive score of 98 points, describing it as an "extremely exotic red wine" that is best enjoyed after 2028. Wine Enthusiast gave it a score of 99 points, praising its concentration, richness, and freshness. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate bestowed a perfect score of 100 points, declaring it a "heart-stopping titan" and a testament to the possibility of perfection in wine.

The 2018 Petrus is a wine of immense power, complexity, and elegance. It is a wine that demands patience and will reward those who cellar it for 8-10 years or more. However, if you are tempted to indulge in its splendor now, be prepared to be captivated by its sheer opulence and seductive charm.
