Arômes de Pavie 2019 is the second wine of Château Pavie in Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, drawn largely from younger vines and lots not selected for the grand vin. In 2019, it’s a classic Right Bank blend—65% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon—picked October 3–10 at 35 hl/ha, finishing at 14.67% alcohol with a notably low pH of 3.46, as reported by Lisa Perrotti-Brown in *Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate*.

Several reviewers delivered excellent reviews, led by *Wine Advocate* (94) and Jeb Dunnuck (94). Perrotti-Brown describes a “deep garnet-purple” wine that “comes charging out of the glass” with blackberry, boysenberry and plum, plus “garrigue, violets, star anise and pencil shavings,” then “velvety tannins” and a “long and perfumed” finish. Dunnuck calls it “Always one of the ‘Second Wines of the Vintage,’” praising “cassis, graphite, white flower, tobacco leaf, and damp earth,” and noting it is “round, and seamless” with clear “mini-Pavie character.”

The style is plush but not careless. *Decanter* (93) calls it “super expressive” with “mouthcoating tannins” yet “a lovely juicy and succulent quality,” layering blackcurrant and black cherry with “wet stone, salinity and minerality,” and concludes: “a big showy wine but with lots of well expressed sides.” *Decanter* also notes 18 months’ ageing in a mix of 50% new and 50% one-year barrels, and gives a 2024–2036 drinking window. Jane Anson (92) emphasizes its punchy side—“cigar box…exuberant…black pepper spice and olive tapenade”—and cites “50% new oak.”

On the more measured end, Vinous (91) finds it “well balanced” with “salted licorice” and “a slightly grainier finish,” but still expects “a decade of drinking pleasure.” James Suckling (93) suggests patience: “chewy and juicy…walnut and nutmeg…Try after 2025.”
