Solid deep rich red purple. This has an impressive weight to it and a juiciness, with noble fruit which suggests more than a hint of the adjacent grand cru, Charmes-Chambertin. Svelte yet with the latent power that typifies Domaine Joseph Roty.

Equally ripe and attractively layered aromas include those of black fruit confit, spice and a similar note of warm earth are also trimmed in enough wood to remark upon. The finer if less powerful medium-bodied flavors are supported by relatively fine-grained tannins and bright acidity on the youthfully austere and balanced finale that exhibits focused power. This too is unusually good and another villages that is absolutely worth checking out. In a word, terrific.

Soaring from the glass with aromas of cherries, licorice, wild berries and sweet soil tones, the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys Vieilles Vignes is medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety, with an especially seamless, integrated profile. Framed by powdery tannins and mouthwatering acids, it's a real success.- WK

(90-92 points) The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys offers mostly red berry fruit on the nose, which is maybe just a little smudged compared to Roty's other Village Crus at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh entry and a fine bead of acidity. The precise, chalky-textured finish compensates for the aromatics.
