Wine Enthusiast, June 2020

(WE 94–96 points) From one of the lesser-known Pauillac crus classés, this wine shows plenty of fine structure as well as ripe black currant fruits from the Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. It is also the succulent...

Blackcurrants and walnuts with sweet berry and cherry undertones. Full-bodied with chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Linear and intense tannins run the length of the wine with intensity and persistence. Try...

Vinous, February 2022

The 2019 Grand Puy Ducasse is class personified. Just as in barrel, from bottle Grand-Puy Ducasse possesses terrific freshness and energy in place of the heavy, extracted style that was the norm just a few years ago...

jebdunnuck.com, April 2022

A beautiful effort that does everything right, the 2019 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse offers a rich, medium to full-bodied, concentrated style that shows the inherent elegance, as well as richness, of the vintage. Darker...

Flowers, red currants and cedar create the nose, while layers of soft, fresh, ripe, dusty red and black currants with touches of olives and savory herbs hit your palate. The tannins are ripe. There is good freshness...

Decanter, January 2022

Expressive and richly fruited on the nose. Dark in profile on the nose and palate. Plush tannins, but soft, they completely grip the mouth with coffee bean, dark chocolate, tobacco and spicy elements. It's a particular...

janeanson.com, October 2021

Powerful liquorice, cocoa bean, espresso and campfire smoke on the opening beats of the wine, silky tannins, well handled blackberry and cassis fruits. Bitter aniseed on the close of play, this has great momentum and...

The Wine Palate, May 2026

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Grand Puy Ducasse needs a little swirling to unveil warm cassis, wild blueberries, and raspberry leaves notes, plus pencil lead and cinnamon toast. Medium to full-bodied, it is firm...

Wine Spectator, January 2022

Well-packed, showing black currant and blackberry fruit flavors, which are marked by bramble and savory accents and carried by fresh acidity through a finish that's scored by humus, tobacco and iron. A textbook, austere...

Vinous, February 2023

(91+ points) The 2019 Grand-Puy Ducasse has a very attractive bouquet with vigor and focus: red berry fruit, touches of cedar and leather, very Medocian in style with impressive delineation. The palate is medium-bodied...

Château Grand-Puy-Ducasse 2019 is a Fifth Growth Pauillac from an estate owned by CA Grands Crus (Crédit Agricole) since 2004. The vineyard holdings are spread across Pauillac and neighboring sectors in many small parcels, and the château’s cellars sit on the Gironde quays in the town of Pauillac. In 2019, production was reported at about 8,000 cases, with the blend given as 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Merlot, and élevage including roughly 30% new oak (some reviewers cite 40% new oak).

This vintage drew notably strong critical reception, with several excellent reviews in the mid-90s. Wine Enthusiast rated it 96 (from a 94–96 range), calling it “one of the lesser-known Pauillac crus classés” but emphasizing “plenty of fine structure” alongside “ripe black currant fruits.” James Suckling also scored it 95 and highlights both drive and shape: “Linear and intense tannins run the length of the wine with intensity and persistence,” alongside “blackcurrants and walnuts” and a long finish, recommending patience until after 2026.

Vinous’ Antonio Galloni (95) frames 2019 as a style shift, praising “terrific freshness and energy” and “tons of transparency and tons of sheer class,” adding, “I loved it.” Jeb Dunnuck (94) likewise calls it “a beautiful effort that does everything right,” pointing to “darker currants, toasted spice, cedar pencil, and tobacco,” and expects it to “shine for at least two decades,” especially with 5–7 years in bottle.

Among the more classically toned notes, Wine Spectator (93) calls it “a textbook, austere, driven and age-worthy Pauillac,” with black currant and blackberry, bramble and savory accents, and a finish “scored by humus, tobacco and iron,” best from 2024–2036. Across reviews, the common thread is Pauillac structure—firm but increasingly polished—matched to ripe fruit and a cellar-worthy trajectory.
