jebdunnuck.com, May 2023

The finest wine I've tasted from this estate, the 2019 Château La Gaffelière is pure Saint-Emilion brilliance and offers a complex, intense bouquet of red and black fruits, iron, truffly earth, tobacco, and bouquet garni...

A vibrant, fragrant red with aromas of blackberries, currants, walnuts and mint chocolate. Medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Pretty walnut notes on the polished finish. Fantastic length. Driven acidity and focus...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, July 2022

Showing better in the bottle than it did in the barrel, and it was already quite good in barrel, the wine pops with tobacco leaf, flowers, ripe red fruits, espresso, and thyme in the nose. Rich, fresh, vibrant, and with...

The Wine Independent, May 2023

The 2019 La Gaffeliere is a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it rolls out with pronounced notes of stewed black and red plums, boysenberry preserves, and Indian spices, leading to...

Vinous, February 2022

The 2019 La Gaffelière has a wonderful bouquet of mineral-rich black and red fruit and sous-bois, a little tobacco and pencil box emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and ripe...

Decanter, January 2022

A rich and round nose, bursting with ripe fruit aromas. Plump and voluptuous on the palate all while having excellent acidity that really lifts it up, so you have depth but also this real aerial aspect. Tannins are smooth...

Vivid reflections, with sandalwood, incense and rose petal aromatics. Complex and concentrated, still young, plenty of density through the palate but so much finesse also. A great wine, confident and still young, give it...

Wine Enthusiast, October 2022

The wine has a dense structure alongside ripe black fruits and generous tannins. Its density brings out the fresh lift of the vintage, giving a wine that has weight and also succulence. Drink from 2026. Roger Voss

This rolls out dense fig, boysenberry and red currant paste flavors laced with pronounced chalky minerality and notes of tobacco, dried anise and juniper. The serious tannic drive on the finish puts this in the...

Château Canon-La-Gaffelière 2019 is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé from the Neipperg family, sourced from estate vineyards on the southern exposures between the Pavie and Ausone hills. The official technical sheet lists a blend of 49% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Franc, and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, making this one of the estate’s most Cabernet Franc–driven wines. It is certified organic (FR-BIO-10) and comes in at 14% alcohol. Fermentation took place in wooden vats over 35 days with pneumatic pigeage, followed by 16 months of aging on the lees in 60% new oak. Harvest ran from 19 September to 7 October 2019, with a reported yield of 51 hl/ha, and bottling in May 2021.

In the glass, the 2019 is described by critics as aromatic and layered, leaning into both ripe fruit and savory complexity. The strongest published takes also frame it as a benchmark vintage for the château. Jeb Dunnuck’s 97-point review is an excellent score, and he calls it “the finest wine I’ve tasted from this estate,” praising a “complex, intense bouquet of red and black fruits, iron, truffly earth, tobacco, and bouquet garni.” He describes a “medium to full-bodied” wine that is “pure, layered, elegant, yet concentrated,” with “perfect tannins,” “plenty of mid-palate depth,” and a “gorgeous finish.”

Despite the immediate appeal Dunnuck notes—“perfumed, elegant, already accessible”—this is still built for the long haul. He expects it to “evolve gracefully over the coming 30 years or more,” positioning 2019 as a vintage that combines approachability with clear aging structure. Overall, the reporting points to a polished, high-definition Canon-La-Gaffelière that emphasizes fragrance, precision, and controlled power rather than sheer mass.
