Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, July 2022

The Le Macchiole 2019 Scrio benefits from reductive winemaking that is intended to lock in the natural fragrances and elegance of this versatile grape. It is fermented in stainless steel and cement and is partially aged...

Vinous, July 2022

The 2019 Scrio (Syrah) is a wine of remarkable precision that has little, if anything, in common with previous vintages. Understated and gracious, with compelling aromatic presence, the 2019 is all class, all refinement...

Wine Spectator, January 2023

Expressive, this red features black cherry, blackberry, floral, mineral and toasted spice flavors. Dense, yet smooth in texture and balanced, with a lingering aftertaste that echoes the dark fruit and mineral flavors...

Blackberry and black olive with black pepper and clove on the nose. Medium-bodied with round, creamy tannins and a juicy finish. Delicious fruit and texture. So enticing. Drink or hold.

Decanter, June 2022

For the last two or three harvests, Scrio has been lighter in style compared to the past. However, in the 2019 vintage this 100% Syrah regains an interesting balance. Crimson in the glass, it shines for its savoury, meaty...

Le Macchiole is an estate in Bolgheri, Tuscany on the Etruscan Coast. Founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolini and Cinzia Merli, the estate has 24 hectares of organically farmed vineyards producing 5 single-variety wines: Paleo Bianco, Bolgheri Rosso, Paleo Rosso, Scrio and Messorio. It was a risky decision to produce single-varietal wines when neighbors such as Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Guado al Tasso were achieving world-renown for their Super Tuscan Bordeaux blends. But with commitment and determination, they achieved the esteem and recognition deserving of the series of their stunning wines.

Sadly, Eugenio passed away and did not live to see the result of his work but his legacy is continued by his wife Cinzia who works devotedly in the vineyards to demonstrate the purity and unique interpretation of Le Macchiole wines.

The 2019 Le Macchiole Scrio is a captivating red wine that showcases the excellence of Syrah from the renowned Bolgheri region in Tuscany, Italy. With its deep crimson color, this wine immediately catches the eye and promises a sensory journey like no other.

On the nose, the Scrio reveals a delightful bouquet of blackberry, black olive, and black pepper, accompanied by hints of clove. These enticing aromas create an alluring invitation to explore further. With each sip, the medium-bodied wine envelops the palate with its round and creamy tannins, offering a velvety texture that is both luxurious and satisfying.

The critics agree on the exceptional quality of this vintage. Decanter rates it at 92 points, noting its interesting balance and savory, meaty character. James Suckling awards it 94 points, praising its delicious fruit, texture, and juicy finish. Meanwhile, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awards an impressive 98 points, highlighting the wine's elegance, integrated tannins, and tight mouthfeel. Vinous also joins in the acclaim, awarding it 95 points and describing it as a wine of remarkable precision that emphasizes freshness and an ethereal expression of Syrah.

The 2019 Scrio is an extremely limited production, with only 3,800 bottles made. The meticulous winemaking process includes fermentation in stainless steel and cement, as well as partial aging in oxygen-prone tonneaux, truncated cement vat, and ceramic vessels. This careful approach ensures that the natural fragrances and elegance of the Syrah grape are preserved, resulting in a polished and refined wine.

With its expressive flavors of black cherry, blackberry, floral notes, minerals, and toasted spice, the Scrio leaves a lasting impression on the palate. The wine's purity and vibrancy are underscored by a lingering finish that echoes the dark fruit and mineral flavors, complemented by a subtle hint of licorice.

The 2019 Le Macchiole Scrio is a wine that embodies the artistry and dedication of its producer. This exceptional Syrah is a testament to the beauty and potential of Italian wines, inviting wine enthusiasts to savor its complexities and indulge in its remarkable balance. Whether enjoyed now or cellared for future enjoyment, the 2019 Scrio promises a remarkable experience that will captivate wine lovers for years to come.
