Bodegas Muga is a family-owned Spanish winery founded in 1932 and based in Haro in the Rioja region. The vineyards are located on the foot of the Montes Obarenses within Rioja Alta and benefit from Mediterranean, Atlantic and Continental climatic influences.

Bodegas Muga owns 620 acres of vineyards but also has control over 370 acres owned by vine growers in the area. The soil is mostly clay and limestone divided into small terroirs, each with its own unique and defined personality. The grape varieties are Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache), Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano for the red wines, Viura (Macabeo) and Malvasia for the whites.

Bodegas Muga has four fermentation rooms containing 90 wooden casks with capacities ranging from three thousand to fifteen thousand kilos. This enables them to make different wines depending on the fruit quality and the vineyards they come from. Traditional methods are followed, using oak throughout all the wine-making process (fermentation, aging and storage). Bodegas Muga is one of the very few Spanish wineries that employ three coopers plus a "cubero" (who specializes in the big casks). Fining (clarification) is done using traditional egg whites in oak containers with capacity for 17,500 liters.

Introducing the 2019 Muga Torre Muga, a remarkable red wine hailing from the esteemed region of Rioja, Spain. This proprietary blend showcases the mastery of the renowned Muga winery, delivering a wine that truly personifies the essence of its terroir.

In the glass, this wine exhibits a deep ruby hue that captures the eye and entices the senses. The bouquet unfolds with a symphony of aromas, led by notes of cassis, graphite, tobacco leaf, chocolate, and crushed stone. Each swirl of the glass reveals a new layer of complexity, inviting you to delve deeper into its mesmerizing depths.

On the palate, the 2019 Torre Muga reveals its true power and finesse. Medium to full-bodied, it envelops the mouth with a deep, pure, and multi-dimensional texture. The carefully crafted blend of 80% Tempranillo, complemented by Mazuelo and Graciano, imparts a harmonious balance of flavors. Firm but velvety tannins provide structure, while good acidity ensures a lively and expressive experience.

This wine is still young and unevolved, promising a splendid future with proper cellaring. If you can resist temptation, allow it to rest for 7-8 years to fully appreciate its potential. However, for those who cannot wait, it can still be enjoyed now, albeit with the understanding that it will continue to evolve and improve over time.

Highly regarded by critics, the 2019 Torre Muga has garnered exceptional scores. Jeb Dunnuck awards it a staggering 98+, praising its sense of place and ripe expression of Rioja. James Suckling also lauds its intensity, power, and concentration, awarding it an impressive 97. Wine Spectator describes it as harmonious and expressive, with a long and focused finish, earning it a score of 93. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate commends the vintage and Muga's quality and quantity, rating it at 95+.

With only 3,000 cases produced, this wine is a true gem to be cherished. Whether you indulge in it now or lay it down in your cellar, the 2019 Muga Torre Muga promises a journey of exceptional flavors and an experience that will endure for decades to come.
